Summary

SITUATION
The airbag warning lamp in the instrument cluster lights up while the vehicle is in motion. The airbag control unit
(ACSM4) contains the following fault(s):
• 930904 - Drivers airbag interval stage 1, resistance too high
• 93090A - Drivers airbag interval stage 2, resistance too high
CAUSE
Tension caused by harness cable tie on short jumper harness located between steering column slip ring and driver’s
airbag creates excess resistance.
CORRECTION
Replace driver’s airbag module.
PROCEDURE
Run vehicle test and follow test plan for stored ACSM4 faults
Check the plug connection of the steering column switch cluster (SZL). Disconnect the plug connection (yellow plug-in
contact), reconnect it and check that it has securely latched into place.
Check resistance thru the clock spring assembly while turning the steering wheel lock to lock. If the resistance
exceeds specification while turning the wheel (spec is 2.5 to 5.6 ohms) then the clock spring assembly should be
replaced.
Note: The short harness that connects directly to the driver’s airbag “must” never be disconnected
on the back of the ignitor assembly. If these two connectors are opened, then entire “airbag with jumper
harness” has to be replaced.
Make all testing at the single inline connector away from the airbag ignitor

If the harness connection is ok and the clock spring checked out ok, and warranty history shows that the
driver’s air bag has not been previously replaced then replace the driver’s air bag assembly.
Make sure harness to air bag is not routed under tension. See pictures below.
Correct tension free routing
Incorrect routing. The yellow wire is under tension.
After replacement clear the fault code entry and test the system.
Once airbag system work is complete, start vehicle, turn steering wheel lock to lock multiple times and make sure the
SRS lamp does not return.
• If SRS lamp is no longer illuminated the vehicle can be released.
• If SRS lamp is still illuminated either the harness is routed under tension or the clock spring assembly must be
replaced.

PARTS RETENTION
The air bag modules replaced to perform and submit for the above repair procedure are the property of BMW
NA.
Your center is responsible for the proper identification, storage and documentation of these parts. They must be held in
a secure retention area until notification of claim payment is made by BMW
NA through DCSnet.
Upon claim payment, the air bag module will be return requested, a corresponding DCSnet Part Return tag will be
generated.

Attention: Inflatable air bags are classified as dangerous goods (DG) by the Department of Transportation
(DOT) and require special preparation, packing and labeling for transport.
• Your center is responsible for following all rules and regulations that apply to the proper shipping of
dangerous goods (DG).
• As listed in the “Ship To” address section of the corresponding Part Return tag, return the requested air
bag module to “Lighting Resources.”
• Please DO NOT return these requested air bag modules directly to Takata or the WPRC
Your center can use the Labelmaster® Dangerous Goods Information System (DGIS) for proper shipping procedures
and guidelines (additional information for the DGIS can be found in SI B01 22 16).
Any return requested air bag modules that are not received by Lighting Resources within 60 days of the claim “credit
date” may be subject to debit.

Work time labor operation code 32 34 000 is not considered a Main labor operation; however, it does require an
individual punch time and an explanation on the repair order and in the claim comments section.

The DG component identified above does not have a supplier specific or dedicated “pre-paid” part return shipping
procedure.
For this situation, the “Ship To” section of the corresponding DCSnet Part Return tag will identify the address of the
“Lighting Resources” facility this part must be shipped to.
