As from following units, Van Hool is using a new type of entrance door emergency valve.

PURPOSE OF ENTRANCE DOOR EMERGENCY VALVE
Emergency valves are fitted near entrance doors, at the inside and outside of the vehicle. The
emergency valve allows the actuating cylinder of the relevant entrance door to be depressurized,
after which the entrance door can be opened.

WHAT IS DIFFERENT?
•

Figures 1 and 2 show a front view of both emergency valves. They look very similar as shown.
Mounting holes are identical in positioning and size.

Unlike the previous emergency valve, the new type has no electric remote reset function. This
means that when activated, the new emergency valve must be reset by turning its handle a
quarter turn counterclockwise by hand. Pressing the door dashboard switch will not reset the
new emergency valve as with the previous version.

•

The pneumatic block together with the angular air fittings at the back of the new valve is slightly
bigger compared to the previous version valve. This means, whenever a replacement is
necessary, the body opening for the emergency valve must be enlarged when this new valve is
used on a coach equipped with the previous version emergency valve. This service bulletin
gives step-by-step instructions on how to perform this modification.

PREPARATIONS:
• Park the vehicle over a flat inspection pit, with the front wheels in the straight-ahead position.
Apply the parking brake. Stop the engine. Switch off all systems and turn off the battery isolation
switch on the dashboard. When using mobile column lifts (for vehicles with 3 axles: always use
six mobile column lifts) instead of an inspection pit, always lower the suspension first.
• Open the mechanical battery isolation switch.
• Put a "DO NOT START" warning on the instrument panel before starting the works.
• Put chocks in front of and behind the drive axle wheels.
• Read the entire procedure before starting to work.

WARNING!
Observe safe shop practices at all times.

Action
Drain the compressed-air circuit by means of the drain valve on the accessories
tank. For the location of the accessories tank, refer to chapter 13.6 of the
maintenance manual.
Turn the emergency valve handle clockwise to depressurize the actuating cylinder
of the entrance door.
Remove the four screws securing the emergency valve to the body.
Remove the emergency valve from the body opening until the air-line ports at the
back side are accessible.
Because the new valve has no remote reset function, disconnect the electrical
connector of the remote reset function as follows:

Remove the cable terminals from the connector.
Cut the cable terminals from the conducting wire.
Insulate the wire ends separately with a piece of heat shrink tubing.
Put the insulated electrical wiring back into the opening.

Transfer the air-lines to the ports of the new emergency valve as follows:

Connect air line of “port 1” to “port 1” of new valve
Connect air line of “port 2” to “port 3” of new valve

Enlarge the body opening for the new emergency valve as indicated further on
under “STEP 7 IN DETAIL”.
Install the new emergency valve in the body opening as follows:
a. Install the emergency valve into the body opening, starting with the front side
as indicated in figure 5.
b. Secure the emergency valve with the four screws.

Charge the air system.
Check the emergency valve operation.

STEP 7 IN DETAIL: To enlarge body opening for emergency valve
7.1

Temporarily reinstall the four mounting screws of the emergency valve. This will
prevent the break free and drop down of the mounting ring located at the back of
the body opening during the next step.

To create passage for the angular fitting of port 1, modify the body opening at the
rear as follows:
a. By using a round file, enlarge the hole with 0.2 inch as indicated in figure 6.
b. Finish the edges with sandpaper as indicated in figure 7.
