SITUATION

Business Navigation (option 606) is a 100% option for 2014 model year US market i3 vehicles. During the
affected production period, some i3s were inadvertently produced without navigation.
The following procedure will describe how to retrofit Business Navigation to the affected vehicles. This procedure
includes changing all necessary hardware, changing the Vehicle Order, and updating the vehicle software.
AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Service Action involves certain I01 i3 REx produced to 06/06/2014.
First check if a Service Action label with a code number 689 is already attached to the A-pillar.
If a code number 689 has been punched out, the Campaign has already been performed and no further action is
necessary.
Vehicles which require this Service Action to be completed will show it as “Open” when checked either in the
"Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or with the Key Reader.
PROCEDURE

Only properly trained personnel, who have passed all applicable technical training courses, should perform
any maintenance or repairs on any Hybrid or Electric Vehicle. Work performed by unqualified persons
may result in severe injury or damage to the vehicle. Additional information may be found in REP 61 00…
Observe safety instructions when handling electric vehicles.
The following procedure describes how to perform the Navigation Retrofit. This retrofit requires replacing
necessary hardware, installing an adapter antenna cable, changing the Vehicle Order, and programming the
vehicle.
1. Order the initial navigation enable code (P/N 65 90 2 350 952) through the Parts department. Download the
code from the Aftersales Assistance Portal when it is available.
2. Submit a PuMA case entitled “i3 Navigation Retrofit VO” to the Electronics area. The response to the
PuMA case will include a new Vehicle Order (VO), which will include option 606.
3. Save the supplied VO onto a USB flash drive. It should be saved in the root directory (main folder) and the
name/extension should not be changed.
4. Ensure all necessary parts (Head Unit, TCB, Controller, Adapter cable) per the Parts section below are

available for installation.
5. Replace the Controller per REP 61 31 195.
6. Replace the Head Unit per REP 65 12 315.
7. Remove the existing TCB per REP 84 10 810. Remove the backup battery from the TCB. It is located under
the cover on the top of the part.
8. Install the backup battery into the new TCB.
9. Install the new TCB per REP 84 10 810.

10. Identify the pink GPS antenna
connector that was removed
from the old TCB (1). Connect
the male end of the adapter cable
(2) to this pink connector. The
adapter cable (P/N 61 12 2 361
716) will extend the antenna
cable to its new terminal end at
the head unit.

11. Route the extension antenna
cable along the existing wire
harness, under the support
bracket, to the head unit as
shown.

12. Connect the female end of the
extension cable to the outermost
blue GPS connection on the
head unit (1).

13. Secure the adapter cable to the
existing wire harness using four
wire ties in the displayed
locations (1).

14. Remove the charging cable from
the vehicle. Shut down the highvoltage system per REP 61 25
900 and connect a workshop
power supply to the EME.
15. Connect the vehicle to ISTA/P
using 2.53.3 (I-level I001-14-07503) or higher, and create a new
session. Before programming,
the new vehicle order provided
via a PuMA case will need to be
installed.

the VO loaded on it into the
ISID/ISSS.
17. Refer to Workshop
Technologies in Centernet.
Select the hyperlink How to
Import a Vehicle Order.
Follow those instructions to
install the VO.

18. Once imported, option 606 should be displayed at the bottom of the vehicle options on the ISTA/P vehicle
home page. If option 606 is not shown in the list of vehicle options, the VO was not imported successfully.
Repeat step 17.
19. Calculate the Measures Plan. Begin programming.
20. During the programming session, the necessary navigation application and voice control FSC codes will be
installed.
21. If the initial navigation enable code was not installed automatically via ISTA/P, it can be downloaded from
ASAP and installed either via ISTA/P or by manually entering in the CID.
22. After successful completions of programming and initializations, select Navigation via the iDrive menu and
ensure navigation is functional.
23. If the car has been retailed, create a BMW Assist electronic subscriber agreement (ESA) using the existing
customer information. This is the same ESA process that is used on other BMW vehicles.

A. Emboss your BMW center
warranty number in the middle

B. Punch out code number 689 (2),
printed on the label; and
C. Affix the label to the A-pillar as
shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix
one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole
of the new label.

Labor operation code 00 00 006 is a Main labor operation. If you are using a Main labor code for another repair,
use the Plus code labor operation 00 00 556 instead.
Refer to KSD2 for the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowance. Enter the Chassis Number, which consists of
the last 7 digits of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Click on the “Search” button, and then enter the
applicable flat rate labor operation in the FR code field.
Even though work time labor operation code 65 99 000 ends in “000,” it is not considered a Main labor operation.
Also, since the “work time” FRU allowance to be claimed is specified, a separate punch time is not required.
If control module(s) fail to reprogram or initializations are required, the additional work must be claimed using
separate labor operations found in KSD2 under the defect code listed above.

BMW I3 REX NAVIGATION RETROFIT - QUALITY LAUNCH SUPPORT PROGRAM

BMW NA recognizes that the “Business Navigation Retrofit” procedure is an inconvenience to our i3 REx
customers. In an effort to address this concern, you may offer your customer up to $500.00 in BMW
Lifestyles products and/or i3 center-installed vehicle accessories or a BMW i Charging Station Purchase
allowance.
This offer is only valid for customer sold, P1 (Priority One) units.
Note: The $500.00 amount is based on the BMW Dealer Net price in effect as determined by the repair date
entered on the corresponding DCSnet claim submission. Please do not include the part “handling” in this
calculation.
For accessories that require installation, this $500.00 can be applied to parts and/or labor.
Submit the claim, as outlined below, on the affected i3 VIN that is pending delivery or has been delivered to
a customer. Field authorization (FAS) is not required.
Note: Always check the DCSnet Warranty Vehicle Inquiry “Repair History (Claims)” sections first before
proceeding with the launch support program.
