SUBJECT

Front Door Loudspeaker Make Noises When Cold
MODEL

F22 (2 Series Coupe)

SITUATION

The customer complains of front door loudspeaker noises when the temperature is below freezing.
CAUSE

Water from the door window may enter the rear area of the front door medium range loudspeaker basket/cage and
can solidify when the temperature drops below freezing, creating the noise.
PROCEDURE

Confirm the customer complaint of the front loudspeaker noise. Proceed to the next steps and remove the door
trim panel and loudspeaker.

1. Working from the bottom,
unclip the cover (1) from the
clamps (2) and the latch
mechanisms with special tool 64
1 020.
Feed out the cover (1) from the
retaining hook (3).
Install the cover (1) as follows:
a. Feed in the top retaining hook
(3).
b. Position the clamps (2) and
side latch mechanisms.
c. Feed in the bottom retaining
hook (3).

d. Clip in the door trim panel.
2. Clamp (1) may bend upwards
when dismantling the cover.
Bend the clamp (1) back by
approx. 45° if necessary.
Replace any faulty clamps.
Make sure the installation
location of the clamps (2 and 3)
is correct.
- Clamps (2) silver
- Clamps (3) black

3. Remove both screws (1).
The tightening torque is 2.6 Nm.

4. Pull the door trim panel (1) off
the clamps (2) in an inward
direction.
Replace any faulty clamps (2).

5. Insert special tool 00 9 325
between the door trim panel and
the front door area Apillar/mirror triangle. Pry out the
door trim panel slightly towards

the inside.
Grasp the door trim panel by
hand and position special tool 00
9 325 directly on the
reinforcement (1) of the first clip
(2). Release the door trim panel
from the first clip (2) by
leveraging against the
reinforcement (1).
Release the remaining clips (2)
in the direction of the arrow
while pulling the door trim panel
slightly inwards with your free
hand.

6. Disengage the Bowden cable (1)
for the release lever first at the
counter support (2), and then at
the door lock (3).
Feed out the door wiring harness
from all brackets.
Unlock and disconnect all plug
connections, and then remove
the door trim panel.

7. Remove the 3 screws at the
locations marked by arrows.
The tightening torque is 2.0 Nm.
Unfasten the plug connection (1)
and disconnect.
Remove the loudspeaker (2)
from the inner door panel.

8. Lower the door window until the

lower edge of the glass can be
easily accessed through the
speaker opening, as shown.

9. Prepare a length of self-adhesive
sunroof seal (5 cm long).

10. With a clean rag, reach through
the speaker opening and clean
the outside area of the lower part
of the window. Remove the
protective tape from the selfadhesive seal and apply it to the
outside of the window in the
position shown. The seal will
direct the water away from the
rear of the loudspeaker.
Reassemble the removed parts in
the reverse order of their
removal.

11. Replace any faulty clips (1and
2).
Make sure the installation
location of clips (1 and 2) is
correct.
