Service Action: Program Control Units (Dynamic Stability Control [DSC] OBD error)
MODEL

F15 (X5)
SITUATION

Due to a software error stored in the DSC control unit, a fault code memory entry is permanently stored. This fault
is not displayed, nor can it be cleared using the BMW diagnostic tools. The fault code memory entry has no
functional effect on the DSC control unit. This fault code entry may result in failing the OBD test when using a
scan tool.
AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Service Action involves F15 X5 vehicles according to VIN selection.
First check if a Service Action label with a code number 683 is already attached to the B-pillar.
If a code number 683 has been punched out, the Campaign has already been performed and no further action is
necessary.
Vehicles which require this Service Action to be completed will show it as “Open” when checked either in the
"Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or with the Key Reader.
PROCEDURE

Program and code the entire vehicle using the latest version of ISTA/P 2.52.3 or higher.
F15 – New integration level: F025-14-03-503
Note that ISTA/P will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the
latest software.
Note: If loss of communication with the DSC module occurs during vehicle programming, it may be possible
to restore communication by using the following workaround procedure:
1. Disconnect the DSC control module from the power supply (remove the DSC module connector).
2. Disconnect the battery charger and battery.
3. Wait at least 5 minutes.
4. Reconnect the DSC control module.
5. Connect the battery and charger.

It should now be possible to diagnose the DSC control module again. A new programming session can now
be performed.
In some cases, this will not be successful and a replacement DSC module is required.

Always connect a BMW approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10).
LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number
683. After the vehicle has been checked and/or
corrected, obtain a label (SD 92-439) and:
A. Emboss your BMW center warranty number in
the middle of the label (1);
B. Punch out code number 683 (2), printed on the
label; and
C. Affix the label to the B-pillar as shown.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the
old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in
the punched-out hole of the new label.

Labor operation codes 00 62 511 and 00 62 512 are Plus labor operation.
If a control module or component was working properly and/or had no related faults stored prior to vehicle
programming and it fails to program correctly or requires initialization, this additional work must be claimed with
separate labor operations under the defect code listed above; refer to KSD2.
Repairs to control modules and components with pre-existing conditions are not eligible to be claimed under
the defect code listed in this bulletin.

Even though work time labor operation code 34 50 003 ends in “003,” it is not considered a Main labor
operation. Also, since the “work time” FRU allowance to be claimed is specified, a separate punch time is not
required.
Refer to KSD2 for the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowance. Enter the Chassis Number, which
consists of the last 7 digits of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Click on the “Search” button, and then
enter the applicable flat rate labor operation in the FR code field.
