SUBJECT

“Low Oil Warning Indicator Light” Comes on After Extended Driving
MODEL

F30 (3 Series Sedan)
F31 (3 Series Sport Wagon)
With the N47T diesel engine

SITUATION

After approximately 2-4 hours of driving on the highway at 80 mph, and at an engine speed of
around 2200-2500 rpm with an average load, the “low oil” warning indicator light illuminates
yellow and the following check control (CC) message (ID 27) displays: "Top up 1 L of engine oil".
Also, fault code: 297200 - oil level (Layer_MOELNIV): Engine oil level too low, may be stored in
the DDE
CAUSE

DDE software error
PROCEDURE

Check the engine oil level and top-up if it is low. For vehicles with an active BMW Maintenance
Program, please refer to SI B01 16 15.
Perform diagnosis with the latest version of ISTA.
Program the vehicle using the latest version of ISTA/P.
F30, F31

Target integration level: F020-14-07-503 or higher

Note: If the vehicle is already at or above the “Target integration level” listed above, then no
vehicle programming/coding procedure is required.
Note that ISTA/P will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do
not have the latest software.
Always connect a BMW approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10).

Vehicle Programming and Encoding
If a control module was working properly and it fails to program correctly or requires initialization,
please claim this additional work with the applicable KSD2 labor operations under the defect code
listed above.
The diagnosis and repair of vehicles “arriving” with failed control modules or stored faults which
will cause them to fail during programming cannot be claimed under the defect code listed in this
bulletin.
Other Repairs
If other eligible and covered work is performed “prior” to programming and coding the vehicle,
claim this work with the applicable defect code and labor operations listed in KSD2.
