SUBJECT

Foul Odor when Switching On A/C
MODEL

F56 (Cooper, Cooper S 2-door hardtop)
F55 (Cooper, Cooper S 4-door Hardtop)

SITUATION

The customer states there is a foul smell when the A/C is first turned on. It lasts for five minutes.
CAUSE

Incorrect fin gap on the evaporator allows water to collect and bacteria to form
CORRECTION

Replace both micro-filters and the new version evaporator (02).
PROCEDURE

For preliminary work, refer to Repair Instruction 51 45 075, “Removing and installing/replacing carrier for
instrument panel.”
Refer to the M640214 attachment for replacing the evaporator (Repair Instruction 64 51 598).
Summary of the repair procedures that must be performed:
• Replace both the upper and lower micro-filters (REP 64 31 010).
• Replace the evaporator (part of the IHKA housing) (REP 64 51 598).
Note: From the parts list below, only one IHKA case with the evaporator and one micro-filter set
are needed to complete this repair, based on the options in the vehicle:
• Option 530 – Manual Air Conditioning
• Option 534 – Automatic Air Conditioning

required.
