SUBJECT

Air Conditioning Cooling is Insufficient or Inoperative
MODEL

E90 (3 Series Sedan)
E91 (3 Series Sports Wagon)
E92 (3 Series Coupe)
E93 (3 Series Convertible)
SITUATION

The air conditioner system refrigerant level is low or empty.
CAUSE

The evaporator is leaking refrigerant.
PROCEDURE

It is not necessary to perform a “Vehicle Test” or to perform and complete the corresponding diagnosis test
plan.
Please use standard A/C troubleshooting procedures as follows:
1. Connect the A/C Charging Station and check the refrigerant charge level.
2. If the refrigerant charge level is low or empty, visually check the system for external leaks (condenser,
receiver/dryer and hoses/connections).
3.

Refer to the attachment, which provides some key areas to inspect for external leaks and some
helpful hints for leak testing.

4. If no other external system leaks are found, replace the evaporator with the “type” that is installed.

• Identify which version of IHKA
housing is installed in the
vehicle:
• Remove the radio and heater
control panel and inspect white
label on front of the heater
housing.
The label will identify which type of
evaporator is installed (either Denso or
Valeo).

5. Recharge the system and check for proper cooling

BMW Antifreeze/Coolant for the amount needed to replace what was drained with a “50/50 coolant/water
solution” at dealer net plus handling (Bulk container reference P/N 82 14 1 467 704).
And as necessary:
The “used quantities” of other repair-related bulk materials (excluding R134a):
• BMW part numbers are at dealer net plus handling, or
• Other materials not available through BMW and obtained locally are at “cost plus 20 percent.”
Enter these material costs in sublet and itemize the amounts on the repair order and in the claim comment
section.
