SUBJECT

When Warm, Engine Fails to Start with Valvetronic Fault 135608 Stored
MODEL

F55 (4-door Hardtop)
F56 (2-door Hardtop)
With the B38M, B46M, and B48M engines
SITUATION

The engine cannot be started once it is already warm.
The Valvetronic (VVT) is fixed at a minimum lift position. The following fault is stored in the DME memory:
• 135608 – Valvetronic: No movement identified
CAUSE

DME software error
CORRECTION

1.

The VVT must be manually released from the lower position by rotating the Valvetronic motor
shaft 90° clockwise (as shown in the attachment).

2.

Program the vehicle using the latest version of ISTA/P (learning the VVT end stops five times is
no longer necessary).
Target integration level: F056-15-03-500 or higher
For information on programming and coding with ISTA/P, refer to CenterNet / Aftersales Portal /
Service / Workshop Technology / Vehicle Programming.
Always connect a MINI approved battery charger/power supply (SI M04 08 09).

Important notes:
In early versions of ISTA, an erroneous error stating that the lower limit was not learned, could occur when
performing this learning service function.
This has been corrected with ISTA 3.46 and later.
If this fault occurrence has resulted in a breakdown, or if the customer states that the engine has not
started (intermittently or permanently), the starter must also be replaced.
Also, during a regular workshop visit not based on a customer complaint, the starter must also be replaced if
either of the following faults situations is found with ISTA:
1. DME fault 135608, “Valvetronic: No movement identified,” has occurred 10 times or more.

Or:
2. BDC fault 8040B5, “Engine start fault when the starter is operated: Engine does not start when
activated,” is stored at the same time as DME fault 135608, regardless of the number of occurrences.
On all vehicles with MSA, the Service Function to “register” a replacement starter must be performed:

If a vehicle control module or component was working properly and/or had no related faults stored prior to
vehicle programming and it fails to program correctly and/or requires initialization, this additional work must
be claimed with separate labor operations (refer to KSD2) under the defect code listed above.
Repairs to address control modules and/or components with pre-existing conditions are not eligible to be
claimed under the defect code listed in this bulletin.
