FRONT SEAT BELT: EXTENDER MALFUNCTION This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI B72 01 15 dated April 2015. . Upper seat belt extender system is failing to deliver the belt and may exhibit one of the following symptoms: A. Seat belt is slipping off/ not being captured by the extender hand B. The seat belt extender hand is broken C. The seat belt extender hand is making noises D. The seat belt extender housing is broken E. The seat belt extender motions are erratic or illogical. The belt extender has mechanically and/or electrically failed. Excessive resistance from the safety-belt reel (twisted safety belt) does not allow the belt to extend properly, causing a failure to deliver the safety belt. The safety belt slips off the hand due to the geometry of the safety-belt extender, which fails to catch the safety belt for delivery.

SITUATION
Upper seat belt extender system is failing to deliver the belt and may exhibit one of the following
symptoms:
A. Seat belt is slipping off/ not being captured by the extender hand
B. The seat belt extender hand is broken
C. The seat belt extender hand is making noises
D. The seat belt extender housing is broken
E. The seat belt extender motions are erratic or illogical.
CAUSE
z
The belt extender has mechanically and/or electrically failed.
z
Excessive resistance from the safety-belt reel (twisted safety belt) does not allow the belt to
extend properly, causing a failure to deliver the safety belt.
z
The safety belt slips off the hand due to the geometry of the safety-belt extender, which fails
to catch the safety belt for delivery.
CORRECTION
Corrective actions vary depending on the situation and may include:
z
Replacement of extender hand with redesigned part. The altered geometry of the redesigned
part allows more reliable capture and retention of the belt during operation.

PROCEDURE
For conditions that are similar to the situations described, proceed as follows:
Situation A or B- extender hand ineffective or broken
1. Verify production date of vehicle.
Is production date of vehicle prior to November, 2014 with no indication of prior
replacement of extender hand?
YES – Replace the original-design extender hand on both sides of the vehicle with the
redesigned parts specified below following attached procedure.
NO – only replace broken part.
2. Test for proper operation of extender/ hand with seat belt.
Does the belt operate properly with the new part?
YES – Repair is complete.
NO – Check the seat belt for kinks or twists and replace as necessary. Replacement of the
extender will not provide a solution.
Situation C or D– Extender hand making noise/Housing broken
Replace seat-belt extender following repair procedure REP 72 11 010 “Removing and installing or
replacing left or right seat-belt extender”.
Situation E – Extender motion irregular

1. Check operation of affected seat-belt extender
a. Enter vehicle on affected side and sit in front seat (key required on driver’s side).
b. Close the front door. Seat belt extender should move out (without key, driver’s extender
will not function).
c. Buckle the belt or open the door. The extender will retract.
2. Run diagnosis with ISTA, working through corresponding test module.
