Boom Grease and Slide Pad Improvement
Altec is committed to providing our customers with safe and reliable products from initial
delivery throughout the useful life of the machine.
Altec Boom Grease
Altec is now providing a new type of boom grease to reduce the condition known as boom stickslip. Altec Boom Grease is the preferred grease for use on Altec crane booms. Altec Boom
Grease will be able to be ordered in three container sizes and supplied through the normal parts
ordering process. Unit maintenance manuals also list the part numbers for the different
container sizes.

In addition to better performance, Altec Boom Grease extends the boom lubrication interval
from once per week to once per month for boom sliding components. The decrease in the
greasing frequency reduces the unit downtime for maintenance as well as the annual grease
usage. Unit maintenance manuals have been updated to reflect the change in lubrication
interval.
Slide Pad Change
The slide pads have changed the material of the plug
inserts used in affected units’ slide pads, from PTFE
to a new low-friction material (refer to Figure 1). The
combination of Altec Boom Grease, new slide pads,
and a new boom paint formula greatly reduces boom
stick-slip.

Trouble Shooting Boom Chatter
The Troubleshooting Guides found in maintenance manuals provide steps to correct boom
chatter on affected units. The Troubleshooting Guide now lists slide pad plug insert replacement and Altec Boom Grease application as methods for helping to correct boom chatter.
Units in the Field
The changes listed are available for units in the field through the normal parts ordering system.
Units that have boom chatter can change to the slide pad plugs and Altec Grease. Updated parts
can be installed at the regularly scheduled preventive maintenance interval. Altec Service will
remove old grease and apply Altec Boom Grease to any units they service in the field or in a
service center. Slide pad plug inserts will be replaced as necessary. Call 1-877-GO ALTEC
(1-877-462-5832) to schedule an Altec mobile service technician for the repair.
