RATTLE NOISE FROM DOOR WHEN CLOSING
MODEL
F22 (2 Series Coupe)

F23 (2 Series

F87 (M2)

SITUATION
A rattle or buzzing sound may be heard from either door when closing. The noise may be intermittent
depending on window position.

CAUSE
The window regulator drive cable is resting against the inside of the door, and can rattle or buzz when the door
is closed.

CORRECTION
Install sound insulation foam between the regulator drive cable and the inside of the door.

PROCEDURE
1. Verify which side(s) the noise is present on by opening and
closing the door multiple times. The window may need to be
fully lowered and raised and retested again to duplicate the
noise.
2. Remove the door trim panel and sound insulation on the
affected side, following repair instructions REP 51 48 060
“Removing and installing/replacing sound insulation in
left or right front door.

3. Peel off the adhesive backing and install sound insulation
foam PN 51 13 8 209 642 on the inside of the door cavity,
preventing the white plastic portion of the regulator cable
from resting on the door.

Note: The photos to the left show the general location for
installation of the sound insulation foam. The foam with be installed
inside the door cavity, between the regulator cable and door.

4. Assemble the vehicle enough to open and close the door to
retest and verify the noise is no longer present.
5. If no noise is present, completely reassemble the vehicle
following repair instructions REP 51 48 060 “Removing and
installing/replacing sound insulation in left or right front
door.
Note: Reference repair instructions REP 51 48 … “Notes
for bonding sound insulation, doors”. Failure to follow bonding
instructions exactly can result in future leaks.

since the “work time” FRU allowance to be claimed is specified, a separate punch times are not required.
