Complaint
1. The shift assistant (Pro) is not working. Upshifting or up- and downshifting is not
possible with the shift assistant.
2. The shift assistant (Pro) is stiff.
3. There is a delay or short interruption when upshifting with the shift assistant (Pro).

Measure
The shift assistant / shift assistant Pro is one of the parts most frequently exchanged
under warranty.
Our colleagues in Munich requested some of the K5x, K46/47/49/48 and K61 shift
assistants exchanged since the 1 January 2018 for testing. These parts were installed
on vehicles in Munich, tested and had the parts thoroughly analyzed by the supplier.
We could not reproduce stiff movement or function failure in any of the parts received.
Notably due to evaluations of existing fault memory entries, we know that some of the
complaints are justified. Therefore we will continue to work on this issue. Please bear
in mind in your everyday work that an unwarranted part exchange not only results in
unnecessary costs but also reduces customer confidence in the reliability and quality
of our vehicle components.
Because of the unwarranted replacements of the shift assistant Pro, we have listed the
following points which affect the shift assistant function and which it would make sense
to test before part exchange:
1. Is it possible to reproduce both the complaint and the fact that the motorcycle cannot
be up- or downshifted with the shift assistant Pro? Is it possible to up- and downshift
using the clutch without any difficulty?
2. Was the customer informed about how to use the shift assistant (Pro) correctly and
was the gearshift lever ergonomically adjusted to suit the customer? What shoes does
the customer wear when driving? Even different shoes can necessitate an adjustment.
A trainer or good sports boot for example can differ considerably in terms of operating
convenience.
3. Is the motorcycle in original condition, especially the clutch lever / clutch lever fitting,
4. Was the function of the micro switch on the clutch lever fitting checked? Are the shift
points correctly adjusted?
5. Is the shift assistant (Pro) retrofitted in the vehicle and the enabling code activated?

Motorrad Retailer can see this themselves in ISTA/P. It can
only be checked in ISTA by your market responsible.
6. Are the gears taught in? Comparing earlier adaptation values with the new taught-in
values may indicate what the actual problem is. It is also possible that, depending on
use, it would be useful for the customer to teach in the gears at regular distance based
intervals.
7. Are there fault memory entries? If yes, was a guided diagnosis carried out?
In the past, widened pins in the plug connections or an already internally broken
cable caused a (sporadic) failure, see example image in attachment.
Relevant fault memory entries which also influence and/or block the shift assistant
function will be added to this list again soon.
