Re: Load Span Tag Axle – Axle Seat Inspection and Torque Value Verification Procedure

We have become aware that, for a specific amount of time, the axle seat-to-axle fastener bolts may have
been under torqued at the factory on a limited number of Hendrickson Load Span Tag Axle (LSTA)
assemblies (Oshkosh Part No. 4359153, Hendrickson Part No. BAH13Z-XXK) equipped on certain
Oshkosh S-Series front discharge mixers. In order to achieve the expected duty cycle of these axles,
Hendrickson recommends these fasteners be brought up to the proper torque specifications at your earliest
convenience. The full details of this activity can be found in the attached Technical Bulletin TB-H816,
Rev. A.
Please read the Technical Bulletin thoroughly to become familiar with the location of the suspect fasteners,
and understand the necessary retorque procedure. Also included with this letter and Technical Bulletin is
a listing of concrete mixer Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) purchased by your fleet that were either
originally equipped with affected axles or retrofitted with affected replacement axles as part of the
procedure in previous Technical Bulletin TB-H807, Rev. B.
The fastener retorque procedure in Technical Bulletin TB-H816, Rev. A can easily be performed by a
qualified mechanic, but requires a torque wrench capable of 500 ft-lbs. If your facility does not have a
torque wrench capable of achieving this specification, Hendrickson will reimburse you for the purchase of
an appropriate torque wrench, up to a cost of $1,000 per wrench. If you have multiple locations that require
this tool, please contact Hendrickson to authorize additional purchases.

SECTION 1

Introduction
Hendrickson has learned that a limited number of Hendrickson Load Span Tag Axle ("LSTA") assemblies
equipped on certain Oshkosh S−Series front discharge mixers may have seat-to-axle fasteners that were
incorrectly torqued at the factory. The axle seats will continue to perform acceptably if this situation has
occurred, but to ensure the long-term durability of the axle and axle seat connections, Hendrickson is
providing these instructions for inspection and torquing of the axle seat fasteners. The affected LSTA
assemblies are equipped on Oshkosh S−Series mixers manufactured:
■■ Between September 1, 2017 and May 30, 2018, and
■■ Between March 25, 2008 and January 30, 2017 and subject to and/or retrofitted per Hendrickson

Technical Bulletin No. TB−H807, Rev. B.

NOTE

This rectification procedure should take approximately 10 minutes per vehicle.

IF YOUR AXLE HAS A "75" MARK STAMPED ON THE TOP OF THE AXLE BEAM (SEE DRAWING−1 BELOW),YOUR
LSTA HAS BEEN PROPERLY TORQUED AT THE FACTORY AND IS NOT AFFECTED BY THE ISSUES COVERED BY
THIS HENDRICKSON TECHNICAL BULLETIN.

To determine if your axle is affected by this Technical Bulletin, refer to Table−1 on Page 3. You will need one
of the following:
■■ Your Oshkosh Date of Manufacture (of the vehicle for which the LSTA was originally manufactured).

The Oshkosh date of manufacture can be found on the driver's door jamb (See Photo−2 on page 4).

■■ The Hendrickson Serial Number, which can be found on a tag on the axle beam as shown below in

SECTION 3

Inspection/Rectification Process
In order to determine the proper rectification procedure for your particular LSTA, you must follow these
procedures:
1. Chock the drive wheels of the vehicle.
2. Place the axle on the ground and turn off the truck (This should result in zero pressure being applied
to the LSTA assembly).
3. By hand, firmly hold the upper part of the fender mount as referenced in Photo−1 on the page 4.
Attempt to "rock" the LSTA back and forth. While rocking the axle, visibly inspect the axle seats for signs
of movement relative to the axle beam.
4. If there is no evidence of movement, re-torque the factory-installed axle seat nuts to 500−520 FT−LBS
using only a properly calibrated manual torque wrench; do not use an impact driver or other tool to
perform final torque of the nuts.
DO NOT OVER−TORQUE THE NUTS! MAKE SURE THAT EACH BOLT DOES NOT EXTEND MORE THAN .52"
(13.2 MM) BEYOND THE EDGE OF THE RESPECTIVE NUT (SEE DRAWING−3 BELOW). IF YOU HAVE OVERTORQUED THE FASTENER, YOU WILL HAVE TO CONTACT HENDRICKSON FOR ADDITIONAL FASTENERS.

5. Provide the Oshkosh Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and the axle's serial number and note "movement not apparent" to Hendrickson Technical Service. The VIN can be found on the driver−side door
jamb (See Photo−2 on page 4).
