DESCRIPTION
There are several possible causes for a 285 code in a Cummins engine. The 3 most common causes are:
1) A problem with the 1939 datalink. Ensure that all modules are communicating on the 1939. For 1939 diagnostics: Click Here
2) An incorrectly programmed parameter in the engine.
For the newer ISB and ISX engines please create a Tech Service case file with the Programming team, they will pull the as built parameters
from the database and provide them to you in the case file.

3) A bad calibration from INCAL. This can also cause only one or two engine guages not to work (see below).

January 2006 INCAL CD-ROM Calibration Issue

Information
This Daily Note is to provide information for a potential calibration issue that exists on the January 2006 INCAL Calibration CD-ROM for certain ISX
CM870 calibrations and all ISM CM875 calibrations. The issue will only occur on ISX CM870 and/or ISM CM875 engines that have the SAE J1939
Multiplexing feature enabled. The J1939 multiplexing issue can result in an active Fault Code 285 (SAE J1939 Multiplexing PGN Timeout Error ­
Abnormal Update Rate).
Calibrations affected by this issue on the January 2006 INCAL Calibration CD-ROM include all ISM CM875 calibrations and ISX CM870 calibrations for
control parts lists (CPL)s 8518, 8519, 8520, 8521, 8522, and 8523. The January 2006 INCAL Calibration CD­ROM can not be used for ECM
calibration transfers on any ISM CM875 and/or ISX CM870 CPLs 8518 through 8523 engines that also have SAE J1939 Multiplexing enabled. ISX
CM870 CPLs 8518 through 8523 and ISM CM875 engines that do not have SAE J1939 Multiplexing enabled will not be affected by this issue.
Calibrations on the January 2006 INCAL Calibration CD­ROM for ISM CM870 and ISX CM870 CPLs 8283, 8284, 8285, 8286, 8287, and 8288 are not
affected by this issue.
A calibration fix for this issue will be included on the next INCAL Calibration CD-ROM release. For ECM calibration transfers that involve an affected
calibration, Dealers can contact their local Distributor. Cummins Distributors can contact the Distributor Technical Support Hotline for assistance.
