Peterbilt is offering best practices instruction on any chassis where the ESA software is updated.

Procedure
ALWAYS Backup the Chassis Parameters
Parameters may be changed by anyone with access to ESA or new parameters may be added due to a software update. Be aware that the
parameters may have been modified since delivery of the chassis. ALWAYS backup the current chassis parameters to prevent overwriting them
prior to any other ESA tasks.

View the Release Notes
The release notes contain a description of fixes included in the software along with known issues.

Ensure ESA is up-to-date.
Connect to the chassis.
Open the Flashing Wizard to view the Release Notes. Tools | Flashing | Flash and Restore Parameters
Select the software version and click the View Release Notes button.

Determine Correct Parameter File Download
The truck plants often reuse the last six digits of the VINs from one year to another, leaving the VIN’s order year digits will differentiate
between the chassis. When the last six digits are used, multiple chassis parameter files may be downloaded when retrieved from ECAT. Manual
reprograming of ALL parameters may be required if the wrong parameter file is uploaded into a CECU.
The following steps will help determine which downloaded parameter file is the correct one for the vehicle being serviced:

Open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\ProgramData\PACCAR\VPD\ESA\Data

In this example, two parameter files for chassis number 308338 downloaded from ECAT.
The file naming convention is 308388##A.ect
The chassis number is the first six digits
## is the order year
A is P for Peterbilt or K for Kenworth

3. Delete the .ect file that does not match the chassis you are working with. In this example, we are working with a Peterbilt
ordered in 2014. The second file is for a Kenworth ordered in 2011. We would keep the 2014 Peterbilt file and delete the
2011 Kenworth file to prevent accidently uploading this file to the Peterbilt chassis.

In the near future, ESA will require the full VIN to avoid the duplicate six digit chassis numbers

Compare Chassis Parameter Files
This process provides a review of which parameters are different from ECAT or which new parameters were added by a software update.
Definitions of many of the parameters can be found after you connect ESA to the chassis, in the Specifications section of the Service

Ensure that ESA is up to date.
Connect to the chassis.
Backup the chassis parameters. Tools | Flashing | Backup Parameters
Retrieve parameters from ECAT. Tools | Retrieve Parameters
Print a copy of the current parameters of the downloaded ECAT file. Tools | Flashing | Restore Parameters
Select Restore parameters from a file downloaded from ECAT and click OK.

7. Click the View eCAT file button in the lower left-hand corner of the window
8. The ECAT Parameter Report will compare the current settings to the ECAT settings. New parameters added due to software upgrades
since chassis delivery will also be highlighted in yellow.
You can save the file as a .pdf by clicking the export button and selecting PDF in the Save as type drop down menu.
It is best to use the last eight digits of the VIN for the file name.

Determine the Correct Parameters for Traction Control, Stability Control, and FMVSS-136 Compliance
These parameters were made available to dealers to modify with the release of FSBs 03-065 (NAMUX3), 03-066 (NAMUX2), 03-067
(NAMUX4). See these bulletins for more details.
1. Ensure the Traction Control, Electronic Stability, and Hill Hold parameters are set correctly (P30-1031-119 and higher are
already set correctly in WebECAT, but need to be verified).
If you have an “old” cluster, turn off the parameter named Enable FMVSS-136 Compliance.
If you have a “new” cluster, set the following parameters as identified above:
ATC Installed (Traction Control)
Electronic Stability Control Installed
Hill Hold/Hill Start Aid Pop Up Enable

NAMUX4 CECU Update for MY2015-2016
The VSCP – Variable Speed Coolant Pump Enabled (Only MY 2017 And Beyond) parameter must be disabled, or
Error Code 135103 will set and the instrument cluster message center displays the “Service advised Repair fault at
convenient time” message.
Refer to bulletin 03-070 for details.
