Loud Rattle Noise on Startup, Rattle Noise Stops in 3 Seconds or Less

Information. Please discard PI0562D.

Condition/Concern
Some customers may comment on a loud rattle noise when the vehicle is first started up. The noise will last for 3 seconds or less then stop. The noise may be
intermittent in most cases, but the frequency of occurrence increases with time. The noise is more likely to occur after an extended or overnight soak and is
easily heard while in the vehicle with the window up. In some instances, DTC P0011 may also set.
The prior engine shut down did not allow oil pressure to the camshaft position actuator long enough to lock it in the start up position for the next start up. The
noise that is heard is the internal section of the camshaft position actuator moving from one end of its range of motion to the other end. The noise stops when
the camshaft position actuator is refilled with oil in 3 seconds or less.

Recommendation/Instructions

•

On 2011 model year vehicles, verify if Recall #11195B applies and has been completed. Confirm in GWM/IVH what part numbers for the Camshaft
Position Actuator Solenoid Valves were installed. If GWM/IVH confirms that part numbers 12628347 and 12628348 were installed, replace with part
numbers 12655420 and 12655421. Refer to Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Replacement in SI.
Important: When replacing the camshaft position actuators, strictly follow SI procedures, otherwise damage to the camshaft position actuators may
result.

•

Replace (both intake and exhaust) camshaft position actuators, and evaluate the vehicle for noise. Refer to Camshaft Position Intake Actuator
Replacement and Camshaft Position Exhaust Actuator Replacement in SI. The camshaft actuators may have been damaged when the engine was
started and made noise.

•

Start the engine and get the oil fully heated up, then shut it off. Let the vehicle sit for an extended period of time over 3 hours, and then evaluate if the noise
has been eliminated on start up.

For 2011 vehicles, reflash the ECM with the latest calibration titled:
New calibration to enhance the operation of the engine oil life monitor to more accurately identify the required oil change interval. Also diagnostic enhancements
for DTC P0011 and fix to address startup rattle.

•

Start the engine and get the oil fully heated up, then shut it off. Let the vehicle sit for an extended period of time over 3 hours, and then evaluate if the noise
has been eliminated on start up.

Note: At this time, no upcoming calibrations are planned for 2012 models.
