Intermittently Front Heated Seats Inoperative
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves diagnosing and replacing the elements for the front heated seat
backs and cushion, if needed.
MODELS:
2011-2012

(JK)

Wrangler

NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with Heated Front Seats (sales
code JPM).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The customer may experience an intermittent condition where one or both front heated
seat are inoperative. This condition will only occur when temperatures are below 10F/-12C
degrees. When temperatures drop, the resistance values of the heated seat circuits will
drop below specification and set DTC, B1092 - Front Left Seat Heater Control Circuit Low
and/or B1096 - Front Right Seat Heater Control Circuit Low. Once the vehicle warms up
the condition will be gone.
DIAGNOSIS:
Using a Scan Tool (wiTECH) with the appropriate Diagnostic Procedures available in
TechCONNECT. If any heated seat DTC's, other then the ones listed above are present,
record them on the repair order and repair as necessary before proceeding further with this
bulletin.
If the customer describes the symptom or if the technician finds the DTC, perform the
Repair Procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Using a Scan Tool (wiTECH) with the appropriate Diagnostic Procedures available in
TechCONNECT, verify If DTCs are present, B1092 - Front Left Seat Heater Control
Circuit Low and/or B1096 - Front Right Seat Heater Control Circuit Low.
2. Is one or both of the DTC set, stored or active?
a. Yes >>> Replaced both front seat back and cushion heater elements, proceed to
Step #3.
b. No >>> This bulletin doesn't pertain, Normal diagnostics needs to be performed.
3. Remove both front seats from the vehicle. Follow TechConnect > 23 - Body / Seats /
SEAT, Front/Removal.
4. Disconnect all connectors going to the seat back, at the bottom to the seat.
5. Remove the seat recliner easy entry levers, if equipped.
6. Remove the seat back assembly bolts.
7. Laid the seat back on a clean work bench,
8. At the bottom of the seat back, pull up on the cover to gain access to the heater
element (blue).
NOTE: The old seat back will not need to be replaced. You will install the new heater
element over the old one.
9. Cut off the old wire harness off the old heater element.
CAUTION: When installing the heated seat element, be careful not to fold or crease
the new heating element. Folds or creases will cause premature heated
seat element failure.
10. Peel off the adhesive backing from the new heated seat element and install the new
heated seat element over the old element.
NOTE: Peel back only a few inch from the top of the new element. Then align it on
top of the old element. Slowly peel off the rest of the backing while applying
the new element over the old one.
11. Route the new wire harness, in the same location as the old harness.
12. While the back of the seat is removed, remove all connectors going to the seat
cushion at the bottom of the seat.
13. At the rear of the seat cushion, pull up on the cover to gain access to the heater
element (blue) and (If equipped) Occupant Detection Sensor (ODS) (black).
14. If the vehicle is equipped with a ODS it will be located on the passenger seat cushion
on top of the heater element. It will need to be removed and discarded when installing
the new heater element.
CAUTION: A new Occupant Detection Sensor (ODS) must be installed when
servicing the front passenger seat bottom heating element. Do not
attempt to reuse the original ODS.
15. If equipped with ODS, follow procedure in TechConnect, 10 - Restraints / SENSOR,
Occupant Detection/ Removal.
16. Cut off the old wire harness off the old heater element.
NOTE: The old cushion will not need to be replaced. You will install the new heater
element over the old one.

17. Peel off the adhesive backing from the new heated seat element and install the new
heated seat element over the old element.
NOTE: Peel back only a few inch from the top of the new element. Then align it at the
top of the old element. Slowly peel off the rest of the backing while applying
the new element over the old one.
18. Route the new wire harness, in the same location as the old harness.
19. Install the new ODS If equipped, follow procedure in TechConnect, 10 - Restraints /
SENSOR, Occupant Detection/ Installation.
20. Install the seat back assembly bolts.
21. Install the seat recliner easy entry levers, if equipped.
22. Connect the electrical connectors.
23. Install both front seats in the vehicle. Follow TechConnect > 23 - Body / Seats / SEAT,
Front/Installation.
24. Clear DTC's that were set before the heated seat pad was replaced.
