Trunk Lid Does Not Open Completely

SITUATION
The trunk lid/hatch does not open fully when unlatched with remote or hands-free operation.

CAUSE
Adhesion between body and unlubricated trunk lid/hatch seal.
Incorrectly installed trunk lid tension spring may also not fully open a trunk lid.

CORRECTION
Clean and lubricate the trunk lid/hatch seal.

PROCEDURE
For conditions that are similar to the situation described:

1. Open the trunk and clean the entire rubber seal surface that
contacts the trunk lid.
2. Allow seal to dry.
Note: The seal must be completely dry before

applying any lubricant..
3. Apply Carbaflo lubricant to the entire surface of the rubber
seal that contacts the trunk lid. .
4.

Using the remote key, unlatch the trunk/hatch several
times.
Does the trunk lid/hatch fully open now?
YES- release the vehicle.
NO (hatch)– troubleshoot the automatic trunk opener (HKL).
NO (trunk lid)– both trunk spring positions must be checked.
Go to next step.

5. On F30, F32, F80 and F82, partially remove the upper part of
the luggage compartment side trim panel to expose the trunk
spring.

6. Observe where the spring is attached to the body. The spring
must be hooked into the rearward slot, as shown by the
arrow. If it is not, reposition the spring into the rearward slot
towards the rear bumper. Refit the removed side panel trim.
7.

Refit the removed luggage compartment side panel
trim.

8. Perform the same spring procedure for the opposite side.
9. Test for proper function by operating the trunk several times,
using the remote key to verify complete opening of the trunk
lid.
