SERVICE ACTION: REWORKING THE SOFT TOP BOW
BEARING
New information provided by this revision is preceded by this symbol

Please perform the procedure outlined in this Service Information on all affected vehicles before customer
delivery. In the event the customer has already taken delivery of the vehicle, please perform the procedure
the next time the vehicle is in the shop.
This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI M54 04 17 dated February 2018.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves 9,900 MINI F57 (convertibles) vehicles produced August 21, 2015 through
August 17, 2017.
Vehicles which require this Service Action to be completed will show it as “Open” when checked either in
AIR, the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or with the Key Reader.

SITUATION
The adjusting element interferes with the soft top and it may or may not cause chafing of the convertible top
fabric at the c-pillar area as shown below.

CAUSE
The adjusting element installed in the soft-top bow bearing support may come into contact with the soft top.

CORRECTION
Replace the adjusting element with an improved part.

PROCEDURE
For any affected vehicle, follow the attached procedure “Reworking the Soft Top Bow Bearing.”

Enter this material cost in sublet and itemize the amount on the repair order and in claim comment section.

It is your center’s responsibility to review the pre-repair sublet amount estimate to ensure the amount
requested to perform this work is customary, fair, reasonable, and does not exceed the necessary
scope of repair work.
The appropriate sublet charge is determined by comparing the pre-repair estimate against the corresponding
amount that is based on your warranty rates.
Invoice eligible sublet work on the repair order at the actual cost charged with no handling or markup. The
sublet amount must also include any discounts or allowances.
Explain and itemize this sublet amount on the repair order and in claim comment section.

REWORKING THE SOFT-TOP BOW BEARING

1. Before beginning the rework, note
the gap between the front and
rear trim for reference.
When the rework is complete,
make sure this distance is
maintained. Adjust trim position if
necessary.

2. Place the convertible top in the
“easy load” position.

3. Locate the adjusting element
(where shown) and remove the
protective cap.

4. Remove the retaining clip (1) to
accommodate easier convertible
top maneuvering.
Note: Before performing the
next step, be certain to have
the assistance of another
employee to hold the convertible top
while replacing parts.

5. Remove the existing shoulder
bolt, nut and adjusting element.

6. Dispose of the removed adjusting
element and nut properly.

7. Using the short
bearing/adjustment element and
flat nut from the repair kit, screw
the nut on the bearing element as
far as possible.

8. Screw the bearing element, with
the attached flat nut, into the
outward side of the bearing
support being certain that:
a. The nut is in the outward side
of the bearing support.
b. The bearing element does not
protrude from the bearing
support on the inward side.
Tighten to 7.0 Nm

9. Clean the removed shoulder bolt
threads and coat with mediumstrength Loctite 243.
10. Connect the soft-top bow to the
bearing support using the
removed shoulder bolt.
Tighten to 9.5Nm.
Note: Be certain the head
of the shoulder bolt nor the
bearing element protrude
from the bearing support.

11. Place the convertible top in the
“easy load” position.

12. Remove the bolt from the soft-top
bow.
13. Remove, and properly discard,
the round washer.

14. Install the rectangular shim from
the repair kit (as shown) in place
of the round washer.
Note: The rectangular
shim stabilizes the trim
strip.

15. In the event of noticeable side-toside offset of the trim strips to
each other (graphic shows correct
alignment),

realignment may be accomplished
by individual adjustment of the
bearing support
16. Repeat procedure on opposite
side of vehicle.
