Replace Left and Right Seals of the Vario Roof Front Section

This Service Campaign has been initiated because Daimler AG (DAG), the manufacturer of MercedesBenz vehicles, has determined that the left and right seals of the Vario roof front section may not be to
specification. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will replace the left and right seals of the Vario roof
front section at the next workshop service.

Prior to performing this Service Campaign:


Please check VMI to determine if the vehicle is involved in the Campaign and if it has been previously
repaired.



Please review the entire Service Campaign bulletin and follow the repair procedure exactly as
described.

Approximately 235 vehicles are affected.

Figure 1
1. Replace seal (circled, Figure 1) of the vario (retractable) roof front section; refer to repair instructions A,
on page 5. Repeat procedure on opposite side.
2. Adjust side window on left and right doors; refer to WIS: AR72.10-P-1950RK.
Note (regarding above WIS instructions):
Refer also to WIS document attached at the end of this procedure. This document is referenced in the above
WIS instructions, however it’s not available in the 01/2013 WIS release.

Move Vario roof into intermediate
position with the roof switch (S84s1)

Secure Vario roof with support (4)

Position of C-pillar top sections vertical.
Leave ignition switched on. The Vario roof
remains in this position for approx. 7 min. in the
stop mode. After approx. 7 min, the Vario roof
automatically lowers into the trunk. The stop
mode can be increased by an additional 7 min
by actuating the Vario roof control switch
(S84s1) again.

Loosen paneling (5) in area of seal (1)

Unscrew bolt (2) and remove seal (1)

Install new seal (1).
Otherwise leakage is possible.

Lay butyl cords (3) down on new seal
(1) as shown

Do not touch butyl cords (3) with bare
fingers. Contact points on seals (1) for the butyl
cords (3) must be free of grease and dust.
Otherwise leakage is possible.

The length of the butyl cords (3) is 10 mm.

Apply lubricant to seal (1)

Position seal (1) on Vario roof front
section (4) and insert rear sealing
base

Observe installation dimension of 27 mm
(B).

Insert front sealing seal on seal (1)
into Vario roof front section (4)

Observe installation dimension of 25 mm
(A).

Uniformly press seal (1) into bracket

Check installation dimensions, align seal (1)
if necessary.

Additionally press on seal (1) in area of
butyl cords (3) after installation

Tighten bolt (2)

Completely close Vario roof with Vario

Check whether seal (1) is seated
correctly

Open Vario roof with Vario roof control If the seat of the seal (1) must be corrected.

Do not tuck seal (1). The seal (1) must
make uniform slight contact with A-pillar seal

Leave ignition switched on. The Vario roof

after 7 minutes. The stop mode can be
increased by an additional 7 min by actuating
the Vario roof control switch (S84s1) again.

Pull or tuck seal (1) at front end and
ensure that it is seated correctly in
relation to A-pillar seal

Position Torx screwdriver T30 at arrest

For this purpose, move Torx
screwdriver T30 below base lip of seal
(3) to through hole in seal (3) (position
A).

Detach arrest (5)

For this purpose turn Torx screwdriver
T30 parallel to beltline (4) and press in
direction of travel until arrest (5) on cover
(2) is detached (potion B).

Remove cove (2) in direction of arrow

Install protection foil (6) between sealing
rail (1) and belt line (4)

Remove sealing rail (1)

For this purpose grasp inner sealing
lips with both hands at end of sealing rail
(1). Turn sealing rail (1) upward and
simultaneously toward outside, then turn
down from beltline (4).
Installation: If necessary, replace
damaged safety hook (7).

Install in the reverse order
