Introduction

Some 2013 — 2014 model year Camry vehicles equipped with the 2AR-FE engine may exhibit an
intermittent service brake warning light “ON" condition. Customers may also notice the tight will
illuminate as the vehicle is being started, and some customers may notice a noise or feeling similar
to the ABS activating during normal braking. The brake booster has been updated to address

this condition.

* This repair is covered under the Toyota Basic Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 36 months
or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle’s in-service date.

* Warranty application is limited to occurrence of the specified condition described in
this bulletin.

Repair Procedure

1. Check to see if the BRAKE warning light is Figure 4.
currently illuminated with the parking brake OFF
and engine ON.

Is the brake light illuminated?
* YES — Continue to step 2.
* NO — Go to step 5.

2. Inspect the brake fluid reservoir level.

Refer to the Technical Information System (TIS), applicable model and model year
Repair Manual:

* 2013 Camry:
Brake — Brake System — “Brake System (Other): Brake Fiuid: On-vehicle Inspection”

* 2014 Camry:
Brake — Brake System — “Brake System (Other): Brake Fluid: On-vehicle inspection”

Is the brake fluid level above the minimum level WITHOUT the customer adding additional
brake fluid?

* YES — Continue to step 3.
* NO — If the customer states they have had to add fluid for the light to go OFF, or if the

brake fluid level is lower than the MIN line, check for leaks and inspect the disc brake pads
and repair as needed.

3. If the brake light is currently illuminated, check the ABS Data List via Techstream to see if the
ABS actuator is commanding the brake light ON,

* if the brake warning light is on and is being commanded on by ABS ECU-go to step 4.
* ifthe brake warning light is illuminated and is not being commanded on by ABS actuator-this

bulletin does NOT apply. Continue diagnosis using the applicable Repair Manual.

4. Press and hold the brake pedal down firmly for 3 or more seconds while the engine is idling.
Repeat this step three to five times while keeping the engine running.

Is the brake light stiil illuminated?

* YES — If the light stays illuminated, this bulletin does NOT apply. Continue diagnosis
using the applicable Repair Manual.

* NO— Ifthe brake warning light is no longer illuminated, replace the Vacuum Brake Booster
Assembly with the updated part and proceed to step 8.

* 2013 Camry:

* 2014 Camry:

Brake — Brake System — “Brake System (Other): Brake Booster: Removal / Installation”

5. If the BRAKE light is NOT currently illuminated, check the ABS ECU for DTCs that would cause
the BRAKE warning light to illuminate.

Are there any related DTCs showing?

* YES — This bulletin does NOT apply. Continue diagnosis using the applicable
Repair Manual.

* NO — Continue to step 6.

6. Inspect the brake fluid reservoir level.
Refer to TIS, applicable model and mode! year Repair Manual:

* 2013 Camry:
Brake - Brake System — “Brake System (Other): Brake Fluid: On-vehicle inspection”

* 2014 Camry:
Brake - Brake System — “Brake System (Other): Brake Fluid: On-vehicle Inspection”

Is the brake fluid above the minimum level WITHOUT the customer adding additional brake fluid?
* YES — Continue to step 7.

* NO — If the customer states they have had to add fluid for the light to go OFF, or if the
brake fluid level is lower than the MIN line, check for leaks and inspect the disc brake pads
and repair as needed.

7. Visually inspect the parking brake, ABS Actuator, and master cylinder hydraulic lines and
connections for any concerns that are causing the BRAKE warning light to illuminate
intermittently.

* If there is no concerns found-replace the Brake Vacuum Booster Assembly with the
updated part.

* If there is a concern found — Diagnosis using the applicable Repair Manual.

8. Test drive the vehicle confirming that the brake system is operating normally, and that the
BRAKE. warning indicator light is not abnormally illuminated.
