Customer statement:
 Oil leak in the rear of the vehicle after a particularly sporty drive.
Workshop findings:
 Oil leak can be detected through the breather line of the gearbox.

Technical Background
The cross section of the breather line is too small for a dynamic driving style (race circuit operation). This can lead
to oil loss via the breather line on the gearbox after extensive aggressive race circuit driving.

Production Solution
Improved double vent tube introduced in production.

Service
If the oil leak is confirmed to be from the top of the transmission vent tube replace the vent tube with the newer
double tube design.
Tip: The powertrain was removed from the vehicle for some of the pictures in this TSB. This was to obtain
clear pictures of installation and the powertrain does not need to be removed for this repair.

The original transmission vent tube is routed from the
drivers’ side of the transmission behind the starter to
the back of the engine ending in-between the throttle
bodies (Figure 1).

The new twin tube design will be installed in the same
location but it is secured slightly different (Figure 2).

Remove the drivers’ side air filter housing
(upper and lower housing) according to the
repair manual.

Note:
For the R8 V10 the rear retractable spoiler
needs to be removed (Figure 4, top).

Note:
For the R8 V10 Plus the panel ahead of the
fixed spoiler needs to be removed (Figure 4,
bottom).

Note:
For the R8 Spyder the engine compartment
lid must be removed according to the Repair
Manual (Figure 5).

Remove the drivers’ side vent hose from the engine oil tank. Feed it through the hole in the bracket and tuck
it out of the way under the bellows on the drivers’ side (Figure 6).

The vent hose connection at the gearbox is
just underneath the front of the engine oil
tank behind the starter (Figure 7).

There may be a couple of clips securing the
wiring harness to the vent hose. Remove
the clips from the wiring harness (Figure 8).

The upper attachment of the vent hose is
attached to a crankcase ventilation at the
back of the engine with a double cable tie.
Remove the double cable tie and discard it.
You should now be able to remove the
transmission vent tube from the vehicle
(Figure 9).

Install the clips onto the new hose assembly
before installation into the vehicle (Figure
10).

Pay close attention to ensure that the clips
are installed with passenger side offset
higher than drivers’ side hose (Figure 11).

Carefully feed the new double vent in to
place. The vent hose needs to be installed
under the transmission wiring connection
and under the starter solenoid wiring
connection (Figure 12).
Depending on the car it might be easier to
disconnect the wiring connections and
reconnect them after installing the vent
hose.

9.

Install the supplied cable tie and anchor clip
as shown to the rear of the vent hoses with
wiring contained in the zip tie. The cable tie
does not need to be very tight, just enough
to make sure the vent hoses are secure and
cannot make contact with the starter motor
(Figure 13).

10. Remove the torx head bolt from the clamp
holding the hard plastic vacuum hose
(Figure 14) and discard the bolt.

11. Install the supplied metal clamp with the
new longer torx head bolt. Adjust the pipe
height as shown (Figure 15) with the top of
the vents at about the same level as the top
of the throttle bodies and tighten the torx
head bolt.

12. Before going any further make sure to
double check the lower transmission vent
hose is still installed and fully seated at the
transmission (Figure 16).

13. Reinstall the drivers’ side air filter housing, trim, covers retractable spoiler or other body panels removed for
access to the air filter housing according to the Repair Manual.
14. Check the Transmission ATF level and correct the level if needed.
15. Test drive and recheck for leaks.
