ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Introduction

Some 2016 – 2018 model year 4Runner vehicles equipped with the TRD Pro suspension kit may
exhibit a tight clearance or contact condition between the LH rear shock absorber remote
reservoir and the inner wheelhouse body panel. A “knock” or “clunk” noise may be heard from the
LH rear of the vehicle over bumps. Follow the Repair Procedure in this bulletin to address
this condition.

Production Change Information

This bulletin applies to ALL 2016 – 2018 model year 4Runner vehicles equipped with the TRD Pro
suspension kit produced BEFORE the Production Change Effective VIN shown below.

Repair Procedure
NOTE
 This bulletin applies ONLY to vehicles equipped with the TRD Pro sus pension kit
(part numbers PTR13-89150 or PTR13-89160).
 Driving confirmation of ANY reported “knock” or “clunk” noise is NOT necessary for this repair.
Affected vehicles can be identified by a visual inspection and a simple measurement.

1. Check the shape of the reservoir bracket.
Does the bracket have an angled step
as shown?
 YES — This bulletin does NOT apply.
Continue diagnosis using the
applicable Repair Manual.
 NO — Continue to step 2.

2. Measure the smallest distance between the
LH rear shock reservoir end and the inner
wheelhouse panel edge.
Is the clearance less than 5 mm?
 YES — Continue to step 3.


NO — This bulletin does NOT apply.
Continue diagnosis using the
applicable Repair Manual.

3. Safely lift the left rear corner of the vehicle to increase access to the reservoir mounting.
NOTE
 Wheel removal is NOT necessary for sufficient access.
 The tire may remain in contact with the ground.
 A two-post lift may be used if available; however, a floor jack is sufficient for this step.

4. Using a 5 mm Allen socket, remove
the No. 1 bolt. Then, using a 6 mm Allen
socket, remove both No. 2 bolts. The
reservoir and bracket are now free.

5. Slide the bracket down the reservoir slightly, then remove the snap ring.

6. Remove the bracket by sliding off the free end of the reservoir.
7. Clean the reservoir end and inspect
for damage.

NOTE
If the reservoir plating is damaged by contact
with the body flange, remove and replace the
left rear shock absorber per the TRD
suspension kit accessory installation
instructions. Refer to “2015-2018 4Runner
TRD Suspension Kit PTR13-89150,
PTR13-89160 Rev. E,” located at TIS –
Library – Service Information – Accy –
Accessory Diagnostic Guide.
If the plating is undamaged, the original
shock absorber may remain in place.

8. Inspect the inner body panel for contact damage. If damage is present, clean any bare metal
with wax and grease remover and recoat with the Dupli-Color® Scratch Fix All-in-1™
Exact-Match Automotive Touch-up Paint.
9. Install a countermeasure bracket with the
angled step toward the free end of the
reservoir as shown.

10. Reinstall the snap ring.
Refer to substeps 5b and 5c in “2015-2018 4Runner TRD Suspension Kit PTR13-89150,
PTR13-89160 Rev. E,” located at TIS – Library – Service Information – Accy – Accessory
Diagnostic Guide.
11. Reinstall and tighten the No. 1 bolt.
Refer to substeps 5d and 5e in “2015-2018 4Runner TRD Suspension Kit PTR13-89150,
PTR13-89160 Rev. E,” located at TIS – Library – Service Information – Accy – Accessory
Diagnostic Guide.

12. Reinstall and tighten the No. 2 bolts.
Refer to substeps 6h and 6i in “2015-2018 4Runner TRD Suspension Kit PTR13-89150,
PTR13 89160 Rev. E,” located at TIS – Library – Service Information – Accy – Accessory
Diagnostic Guide.
13. Confirm that the reservoir is securely mounted and has adequate clearance to the body.

14. Safely lower the vehicle.
15. Test drive the vehicle to confirm that there is no abnormal noise.
