DESCRIPTION
Certain 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012 MaxxForce® 13 engines have the potential to incur damage due to
engine overspeed (RPM), when vehicle is out of gear. To prevent engine damage, this campaign will require
recalibration of the engine ECM to software level 3.11 which will force an engine shutdown (only in a parked
state or if the vehicle is not moving) when engine overspeed (excessive RPM) occurs. The software is
applicable only to certain vehicles marked in Service Portal® with AFC 12946.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

WARNING: To prevent vehicle damage, personal injury or death, park the vehicle on a flat,
level surface. Make sure the engine ignition is in the off position, and the transmission is in neutral
or in the park position, if the vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission. Set the parking
brake, block the wheels to prevent the vehicle from moving in both directions, and disconnect the
batteries at the negative terminal before doing any service procedures on the vehicle.

WARNING: To prevent personal injury or death, always wear safe eye protection when
performing vehicle maintenance.

WARNING: To prevent personal injury or death, make sure that the engine has cooled before
removing components.

This AFC raises the calibration level to 3.11. First, check to see if the ECM has the latest software by referring
to the vehicle calibration scorecard on the Service Portal ® system. If the calibration scorecard indicates that
the calibration is not current, the engine must be reprogrammed.
ECM Programming method for 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012 MaxxForce® 13 engines is to use NETS or Auto

ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURE
Expense is to be charged to Warranty. Claims are to be submitted in the normal manner, making reference to
Authorized Field Change Number G-12946.
It is important that the coding be completed properly to assist in processing the warranty claim. Complete
instructions will be found in the Warranty Policy Manual, Section 7.1.8.
As with all claim submissions, items acquired locally must be submitted in the “Other Charges” tab. The cost
of any bulk items (such as a bag of cable tie straps, roll of wire, barrel of oil, or tube of silicone) should be
prorated for the cost of the individual pieces / amount used during each repair.
To ensure this important improvement is made in a timely manner, all claims for G-12946 activity must be
submitted by 30 December 2013 or within the normal warranty period for the vehicle, if after 30 December 2013.
