Defect Description:
Certain vehicles were built with non-hardened washers on front steer axle U-bolts. This
MIN provides the steps necessary to replace the current front steer axle U-bolt washers
with new case-hardened washers.

No special tools required.

Work Instructions
WARNING! Park vehicle on hard flat surface, turn the engine off, set the parking
brake, and install wheel chocks to prevent the vehicle from moving in both
directions. Failure to comply may result in property damage, personal injury, and
/ or death.
WARNING! If the vehicle must be raised, do not work under the vehicle supported
only by jacks. Jacks can slip or fall over, potentially resulting in property damage,
personal injury, and / or death.
WARNING! Always wear safe eye protection when performing vehicle
maintenance. Failure to comply may result in personal injury and / or death.
1. Bring vehicle into shop and park on flat surface.
2. Shift transmission to Park or Neutral, set parking brake, and install wheel chocks.
NOTE: If chassis needs to be raised for clearance to U-bolts, front steer axle must
be placed securely on jack stands.
3. If required, raise vehicle, place steer axle on jack stands, and remove jack.
4. Remove nut and washer from left front wheel U-bolt. Discard washer.
5. Install new washer and nut on left front wheel U-bolt.
6. Using torque wrench, tighten nut to 200 lb-ft (271 N•m).
7. Repeat Steps 4 - 6 for remaining three nuts and washers on left front side steer axle
U-bolts.

8. Using torque wrench, tighten four nuts in diagonal pattern (Figure 1) to 300 lb-ft
(405 N•m).
9. Using torque wrench, tighten four nuts in diagonal pattern (Figure 1) to final torque of
375 lb-ft (508 N•m).
10. Repeat Steps 4 - 9 for right front side steer axle U-bolts.
11. If required, remove jack stands and lower vehicle.
12. Remove wheel chocks.

WARRANTY CLAIMS
Warranty claim expense is to be charged to Warranty. Claims are to be submitted in the
normal manner, making reference to Misbuild Investigation Notice 14109.
It is important that the coding be completed properly to assist in processing the warranty
claim. Complete instructions will be found in the Warranty Policy Manual, Section 7.1.8.
As with all claim submissions, items acquired locally must be submitted in the “Other
Charges” tab. The cost of any bulk items (such as a bag of cable tie straps, roll of wire,
barrel of oil, or tube of silicone) should be prorated for the cost of the individual pieces /
amount used during each repair.
To make sure this important improvement is made in a timely manner, all claims for
14109 activity must be submitted by 09 April 2015 or within the normal warranty period
for the vehicle, if after 09 April 2015.
