DESCRIPTION
The performance and life of a heat exchanger is significantly affected by cleanliness. If an engine overheats or
low engine power occurs, visually inspect the cooling package cores for signs of dirt or debris. Fluid leaks can
cause radiator fin clogging when they are pulled into the air stream.

NOTE: Engine compartment fluid leaks should be repaired as soon as possible to prevent external
radiator clogging.

The following procedure is recommended as part of the scheduled maintenance program to ensure road dirt
and debris are removed from the cooling system, and to ensure optimum cooling system performance.
Application of Simple Green is critical when oil or fuel contamination is present. Use of other cleaners may be
corrosive and should be avoided.

Service Procedure for Front to Back Radiator Assemblies

WARNING:
To avoid personal injury or death, shift transmission to neutral or park, set parking brake,
and block wheels before doing diagnostic or service procedures.

CAUTION:
The use of a pressure washer or steam cleaner may damage the cooling module fins that
can reduce the cooling efficiency and increase external radiator plugging.

1. Mix Simple Green cleaner in a 50/50 mixture with water in the sprayer tank.

2. Spray the condenser and allow the solution to soak in. Move the AC condenser out of position without
disconnecting the refrigeration lines. Using a garden hose with a pistol grip nozzle clean the condenser by
spraying water from the radiator side of the condenser through the condenser. Thoroughly clean each row of
fins by slowly spraying vertically then horizontally. Spray the water at a 45 degree angle or less to dislodge any
debris and rinse the condenser.
3. Spray both radiators with the Simple Green cleaning solution. Allow the cleaning solution to soak 20 to 30
minutes. Additional cleaning solution may be applied to heavily plugged areas.
4. After the soak period, using a garden hose with a pistol grip nozzle clean the cooling package by spraying
water from the engine side of the radiators out toward the front of the vehicle. Thoroughly clean each row of fins
slowly spraying vertically then horizontally. Spray the water at a 45 degree angle or less to dislodge any debris
and rinse the cooling module.
5. Inspect the fins with the technicians mirror and a flashlight to insure adequate cleaning. If areas were missed,
spot clean those areas following the steps above.
6. If the radiators are heavily plugged with debris, it may be necessary to remove the front radiator (LTR - Low
Temp Radiator) to clean both radiators separately. If the cooling system is drained, it is very important to follow
the correct fill procedure. Refer to TSI 09-12-06.
7. Reinstall the AC condenser.
