Applies To : RE Busses equipped with side discharge radiators Built prior
to 1/18/2008

DESCRIPTION
RE Busses equipped with side discharge radiators Built prior to 1/18/2008 utilizing a hydraulic
pump driven fan drive may experience premature fan belt wear. It is imperative that we follow
the correct procedures to insure the best belt pulley alignment possible. Units built after
1/18/2008 will have a shim in place and should not require pump alignment. Please open an
iKNow case file for assistance if the unit is built after 1/18/2008.

SYMPTOMS
• Premature fan belt wear

RESOLUTION
1.

First verify the build date. If built prior to 11/26/2007 start by replacing the hydraulic pump
mounting bracket with the current part. If built after the 11/26/2007 date the mounting
bracket should be acceptable.
2. After the bracket has been verified/replaced as needed visually inspect the pump to see

if there is any sign of miss­alignment. Remove the drive belt from the hydraulic pump
pulley. Loosen rear mount support bolts and cable to relax the rear of the pump. Verify
front pump mounting is properly mated to bracket and bolts are secure. Do not reinstall
the rear support at this time. Measure the distance between the back of the drive pulley
and the face of the mounting bracket using stacked feeler gauges. We would like this

measurement to be .080" +/- .010". If the gap is larger than the specification you will
need to place washers of an appropriate thickness and diameter between the pump and
mounting bracket to obtain the correct dimension. Note: This may require more than one
washer. If this measurement is less than the minimum specification create an iKNow
case file for assistance.

Using the measurement taken with the feeler gauges subtract .080" from your
measurement to find what thickness washers you will need. You will then need to find
appropriate thickness washers to shim the pump back as close to the 0.080" as
possible. More than one washer per bolt may be required. See example below.
Example:

Measurement

Difference is appropriate size washers to shim the pump.
In this example the washers would need to be 0.093" but this will vary depending on
initial measurement taken.
2. Loosen and remove both front mounting nuts and slide pump away from mounting

bracket. Install selected thickness washers over each of the mounting bolts between the
pump and mounting bracket. Carefully slide the bolts through the pump flange making
sure that the washers remain in place. Secure the pump to the front bracket using the
nuts removed earlier. This will move the pump away from the mounting bracket and
leave a visible gap between the pump and mounting bracket. Note: In some cases it may
be necessary to install slightly longer bolts.

5. After the front mounting bolts are secured re­install the rear pump mounting support

bracket and cable. Care must be taken while securing rear support to prevent binding /
loading of the pump in any direction. This is to insure square installation of the pump and
to prevent possible pump damage.
6. Make final measurement to insure the pump pulley is within the 0.080" +/­0.010" range.
7. Reinstall belt and run to verify proper operation.
