Title : Exhaust Leak Troubleshooting for 2010 Emission MF IBB Engines
Applies To : 2010 and later HD models

DESCRIPTION
Driver may complain of odor entering the cab but no leak path is visible.
TROUBLESHOOTING
• Visually inspect Turbo Pipe for rubbing frame, cab, crossmember or other objects. If signs of rubbing are present:
◦ Inspect engine mounts for excessive wear or cracking.
◦ Inspect propper gap at the lower washer
◾
Front Mount 0.050 (3/64+) inch nominal with a permissible range of 0.015 to 0.085 inch.
◾
Rear Mount 0.085 (5/64+) inch nominal with a permissible range of 0.015 to 0.155 inch.
Visually Inspect all pipe joints carefully for loose or missing clamps and signs of exhaust soot present. Note that 2010 pipes use a Marmon
style V band clamp design @ the joint between the intermediate pipe to the turbo pipe joint if so equipped rather than the prior Torca slot
slip joint design. This design also uses a gasket to seal the joint in most cases

• Visually Inspect all pipes for damage or visible cracks.
• Inspect to verify that the PDOC clamp is in place. If broken or missing it is very important to install the V­Band clamp listed in parts
section.
• Carefully Inspect flexible section (bellows) for signs of soot as the bellows can crack internally and allow exhaust gases to escape.
◦
If there is a soot ring in the center of the bellows suspect that the bellows is cracked
◦
If heavy soot is present in center section of bellows suspect that the bellows is cracked
◦
If soot is only in weld area at either end of bellows suspect a pin hole or poor weld

• Visually inspect the aftertreatment assembly for loose clamps, cracks or signs of leaks. There is a drain on the outlet can of
horizintal systems a small leak is normal at this position.
Horizontal assembly inspect clamps for leaks

Drain Hole located on outlet between clamps should point down.

If no leaks are apparent it may be necessary to perform a stationary
regen using a service tool to find the leak. Perform OBFCT and check for
leaks.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
Once leaks are verified repair accordingly.
•

If leak is found at Marmon Joints
◦ Remove clamp
◦ Inspect joint mounting flanges for damage. Replace any damaged part as necessary
◦ Inspect clamp for damage. Replace as required
◦ Install new gasket as required
◦ Connect mating flanges and install clamp over Marmon joint.
◦ Verify that bellows/flexible section of pipe is relaxed and alligned. If not loosen rear clamp at intermediate
pipe or inlet to the aftertreatment assebly and adjust the pipe so that the flex section is as straight as
possible.
◦ Secure Clamps

•

If leaks are found on the turbo pipe at the flex section, weld areas or cracked the pipe will
need to be replaced.
◦ Remove clamps from both ends of the pipe

◦ Install replacement pipe and gaskets as needed secure the Marmon clamps over the joints
◦ Verify the flex section is relaxed and the pipe is alligned
◦ Secure the clamps
