General Information
Beginning January 1, 2016, to improve starter engagement, the number of teeth on 2016 DD13/15/16 engines
and applicable 39MT starters has been reduced. On 2016 and newer DD13/15/16 engines, the ring gears have
150 teeth, and the starters have 11 teeth. 2015 and older engines have ring gears with 160 teeth and starters
with 12 teeth. Starters for 2015 engines must not be used on 2016 engines, and vice versa.

NOTICE
Installing the wrong starter on an engine will result in significant damage to the starter and ring gear,
requiring replacement.
Delco Remy is labelling 39MT starters according to the correct engine application to assist in quick
identification. See Fig. 1 and Fig. 2. An identification label will be affixed to the starter housing, and another
beside the part number label on the starter packaging.

NOTE: Starters already manufactured and currently in circulation will not be retroactively labeled.
Before replacing the starter, always verify it is the correct one for the engine.
