Diagnostic Trouble Code ( DTC ) P0422 Lighting The Malfunction Indicator Light (
MIL ) - US17 (GHG17), Common Rail Fuel System ONLY

Cause

Model Year 2017, 2018 GHG2017 Emission vehicles equipped with Variable
Geometry Turbocharger (11L, 13L):
Chassis with Engine Control Module (EMS) Main Software (MSW) part number
23033425 or older are more likely to generate DTC P0422 due to the software.
Model Year 2017, 2018 GHG2017 Emission vehicles equipped with Turbocharger
Compound (13L only):
Chassis with Engine Control Module (EMS) Main Software (MSW) part number
23080726 or older are more likely to generate DTC P0422 due to the software.

Solution

Overview
Software for the Engine Management System ( EMS ) has been released that addresses
P0422.

Repair
1. Prior to diagnosis or parts replacement ensure that EMS software is updated to the
current version.
2. If the software is current with or without other codes or symptoms:
- If P0422 status is " CONFIRMED" in the Detailed Status Information as
shown below, proceed with diagnosis of the code.

- If P0422 status is not "CONFIRMED", there is no previous history of this code
setting frequently, and no other codes to suggest a related issue, clear the code
and release the chassis.
3. If the software is not current and P0422 is the only code and symptom present:
- Update the Engine Control Module software to current levels.

• If both the EMS and Aftertreatment Control Module ( ACM ) have
updates available, program the EMS FIRST.
4. If the software is not current and there are other codes or symptoms present:
- Update the Engine Control Module software to current levels.
- Proceed with diagnosis of the other codes.
