Closing aid for rear lid (I-no 4E7/GY1) does not function at times.
The message "Tailgate open" can be displayed in the instrument cluster.

Cause
The rear lid closes at a higher speed particularly at cold temperatures.
The signal from the microswitch in the lid lock is too short and cannot be read out clearly by the control
unit software.

Rear lid control units with updated software have been installed in the vehicle since November 7, 2014.
Remedial action
Replace, re-code and teach (calibrate) the existing rear lid (tailgate) control unit, depending on the
software version.

Switch off the ignition and remove the ignition key before disconnecting the control unit.
Ensure that the power supply is not interrupted during programming.
Connect a battery charger with a current rating of at least Nominal value 90 A to the vehicle battery.
Information
The 9900 - PIWIS Tester III instructions take precedence since the description may be different with
later Tester releases.
The procedure described here has been structured in general terms; different text or additions may
appear on the 9900 - PIWIS Tester III.

Connect a battery charger or power supply, suitable for AGM type batteries, recommended current
rating of 90A fixed voltage 13.5V to 14.5V to the vehicle and switch it on.

Connect the PIWIS Tester to the vehicle and switch it on.

Switch on ignition.

Read out the software version of the existing rear lid (tailgate) control unit:

Select the "Tailgate" control unit in the 'Control unit overview' on the PIWIS Tester and
press •F12“ to confirm your selection.

Read out the software version of the rear lid (tailgate) control unit in the 'Actual values/input
signals' menu:
a) If the software version is "0043" (or if the part number index is 7P5.959107.E), the
control unit can remain in the vehicle

b) If the software version is not "0043" replace the control unit with a new control unit
(Part No.: 958.618.080.04):

Replace control unit for rear lid (tailgate), depending on the software version:

Select the "Control unit replacement" function in the 'Tailgate control unit' selection area
in the 'Maintenance/repairs' menu and press •F12“ to confirm.
5.2
Select the “Read data” function and press •F12“ to confirm.
5.3
Press •F8“ to start reading out data.
5.4
Check the chassis number. Press •F12“ to confirm.

Switch off ignition and install new control unit, see Workshop Manual Workshop Manual
'556819 Removing and installing control unit for rear lid'.

The rear lid remains open.
Switch on ignition, select "Write data" in the 'Maintenance/repairs' menu (for instructions,
see above) and press •F12“ to confirm your selection.

Press •F8“ to start the process.
The data that was read out is written to the control unit.

The PIWIS Tester displays the message: Data has been written, press •F12“to continue.
Re-code control unit for rear lid (tailgate):

Vehicle data must be updated before starting coding:

In the 'Control unit overview', call up the Additional menu by pressing •F7“.
6.1.2
Select "Maintenance of vehicle data" and press •F12“ to confirm your selection.
6.1.3
Press •F12“ again to move to the next option.
6.1.4
Press •F12“ a second time to move to the next option.
6.1.5
Press •F12“ a third time to move to the next option.

Scroll down in the list until the option “SL9 - Repair data record for tailgate” is
displayed.
Highlight the option and tick the 'Installed' column. Press •F12“ to confirm
your selection.

Coding value is displayed. Press •F8“ to write values.

Press •F11“ to return to the ‘Control unit overview’.
Select “Automatic coding” in the 'Codings/adaptations' menu and press •F12“ to
confirm your selection.
Coding is performed automatically. A progress bar appears.

Once coding is complete, end the process by pressing •F12“.

CAUTION
When you start the calibration/teaching process, the tailgate moves to its limit stops. Mechanical force limitation is not guaranteed during this process.

Danger of pinching and squashing body parts.
•
Incorrect values for the control unit, resulting in malfunctions.
Take precautions to ensure that no body parts and objects can get caught in the tailgate.

Re-teach (calibrate) rear lid (tailgate):
7.1
Select the "Calibration" function in the 'Maintenance/repairs' menu and press •F12“ to
confirm your selection.
7.2
Read the warnings and confirm by pressing •F12“.
Start the calibration process by pressing •F8“.
7.3
Actuate the "Close tailgate" switch on the vehicle the rear lid (tailgate) closes.

Actuate the "Open tailgate" switch on the vehicle the rear lid (tailgate) opens.
An acoustic signal sounds if the calibration process is successful.
Otherwise, the rear lid must be closed and opened again.

Read out the fault memory and delete it if necessary.

Switch off ignition.
10 Switch off the PIWIS Tester and disconnect it from the vehicle.
11 Disconnect the battery charger/power supply from the vehicle.
