SERVICE ACTION: OUTSIDE REAR COMBINATION
LAMP HARNESS REPLACEMENT (SA334)

This bulletin provides the procedure to replace the outside rear combination lamp harness on
some 2016-2017MY Optima (JFa) vehicles, produced from September 25, 2016 through March
16, 2017, which may exhibit an intermittent inoperative brake light with the possibility of a
“Check brake light” warning on the instrument cluster display. Follow the procedure outlined in
this bulletin to replace the outside rear combination lamp harness. Before conducting the
procedure, verify that the vehicle is included in the list of affected VINs.

 NOTICE
A Service Action is a repair program without customer notification that is performed
during the warranty period. Any dealer requesting to perform this repair outside the
warranty period will require DPSM approval.
Repair status for a VIN is provided on WebDCS (Service → Warranty Coverage →
Warranty Coverage Inquiry → Campaign Information). Not completed Recall / Service
Action reports are available on WebDCS (Consumer Affairs → Not Completed Recall
→ Recall VIN → Select Report), which includes a list of affected vehicles.

LAMP HARNESS REPLACEMENT (SA334)

Replacement Procedure:
1. Open the trunk, turn the cover knob (A)
(clockwise for left side, counter clockwise
for right side) and then carefully remove
cover (B).

Left rear combination lamp shown in images below

Unplug the main outside lamp connector
(C) by pushing down on the lock and
pulling the connector outwards.

Remove the four (4) retaining nuts and
remove the combination lamp assembly
from the vehicle.

LAMP HARNESS REPLACEMENT (SA334)

With the combination lamp uninstalled
from the vehicle, detach the main outside
lamp connector (D) from the tab and
disconnect the small connector (E).

Uninstall the two bulb sockets and
remove the complete harness.

6.

Transfer the two bulbs (brake and turn
signal) from the old harness to the new
improved harness, and then reinstall the
harness in the reverse order of removal.

 NOTICE
If a brake lamp bulb is
inoperative, replace as necessary.

7.

Reinstall all removed components in the reverse order of removal.
Tightening Torque for nuts:
26 lb.in – 34 lb.in (2.94N.m – 3.92N.m, 0.3 – 0.4 kgf.m)

8.

Repeat steps 1-7 for the other side.

9.

Confirm proper operation of the combination lamps.
