Hi everyone, Bruce Smith here with important information about the Takata inflator recall.
Today, we notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or NHTSA of our intent to recall approximately 700-thousand more front passenger inflators here in
the U.S.
I’ve shared numerous times since May of 2016 that NHTSA issued a directive for the five-phased recall of all non-desiccated inflators from the market over a period of
several years. NHTSA ordered these actions after scientific studies concluded that the non-desiccated ammonium nitrate propellant used in many Takata airbag inflators
can degrade over time due to temperature cycling and environmental moisture.
Considering the number of vehicles containing non-desiccated inflators not yet recalled, as well as NHTSA’s conclusion that time was required for the propellant to
degrade to a point where the inflator became dangerous, NHTSA required the inflators to be recalled on a rolling basis.
The next group of inflators scheduled for recall this year were identified based on geographical regions of the United States and the age of vehicles. Pursuant to NHTSA’s
directive, the recall expansion we notified NHTSA about today, includes model year ’13 vehicles in zone A of the United States, model year 2010 vehicles in zone B of the
United States, and model year ‘09 vehicles in zone C of the United States. Models older than the respective years I just mentioned were already recalled in earlier phases.
As a reminder, Honda previously recalled all non-desiccated driver inflators installed in its vehicles in the US. So, no new driver inflators are affected by this expansion.
Further, following NHTSA’s rolling release, next year American Honda will recall all remaining vehicles originally equipped with Takata non-desiccated inflators.
American Honda will issue an iN message providing more specifics about these recalled vehicles. In addition, updated Service Bulletins with specific instructions will be
issued. Check VIN inquiry to ensure you are referencing the correct Bulletin.
Please, make sure everyone reads the instructions and that the specifics of the repair methods are understood for these vehicles. Do not assume that the repair method is
understood without reading the Service Bulletin instructions for each model.
As for customer notification of this latest recall, I cannot say exactly when customer mailings will take place. This will be within the next 60 days and I’ll update you in
another video or, you will receive an iN message with these details. Never the less, I will make sure you receive a communication from American Honda before the mailings
begin.
American Honda and our dealers lead the industry in completing inflator recall repairs. We should all be very proud of this. Again, I thank you for all of your hard work and
dedication. We need to keep up the same intense efforts we have demonstrated thus far to this next group of recalled vehicles and continue to do our best in keeping our
customers safe.
