DESCRIPTION

In some areas ambient air temperatures reaching below 15F (-10C) and high levels of humidity, an operator may experience

engine stalling, low performance and or poor aftertreatment performance. This is caused by condensation accumulating and

freezing within the Charge Air Cooler (CAC); affecting air flow into the engine.

PROCEDURE

Navistar approved winter front should be installed to limit air flow through the cooling module. Navistar approved refers to any

parts that can be purchased through the International parts system.
Winter fronts and CAC covers should be opened or removed when operating temperatures are

above 35F (0C), engine overheating could occur causing engine damage.
Winter fronts are not to be used with the PSI 8.8L propane engine.
Winter covers that are installed on A26 vehicles cannot be fully closed, they will require an

opening to allow 25% airflow.

Winter fronts that have large slots and do not cover the bumper opening are not effective in

preventing CAC freezing. In extreme cases when operating below 0F (­15C) it may be necessary

to use a cover for the CAC.

RECOMMENDATION: When available, shutters should be ordered to automatically compensate for cold temperature operation.
