STEERING GEAR YOKE PLUG AND
ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT

SUBJECT:

This bulletin provides the procedure to replace the steering gear box yoke plug and assembly
on some 2014-2017MY Forte (YD), produced from February 18, 2013 through November 15,
2016, and some 2017MY Forte (YDm) vehicles, produced from May 15, 2016 through February
9, 2017, which may exhibit a ticking noise while turning the steering wheel with the vehicle
stopped or a rattle noise while driving. This condition is caused by a worn lining on the steering
gear box yoke assembly. Follow the procedure outlined in this bulletin to replace the steering
gear box yoke plug and assembly with updated parts.

Replacement Procedure:
1. With the vehicle in the lowered position
on a vehicle lift, remove the joint
retaining bolt (A) and detach the
universal joint assembly from the pinion
of the steering gear box.

Tightening torque for bolt (A) :
23.9 – 27.5 lb.ft (32.4 – 37.3 N.m,
3.3 – 3.8 kgf.m)

Raise the vehicle on the vehicle lift then
detach the roll rod stopper retaining bolt
(B).

Tightening torque for bolt (B):
79.6 – 94 lb.ft (107.9 – 127.5 N.m,
11.0 – 13.0 kgf.m)

Remove the two (2) mounting bolts (C)
and one (1) lower control arm mounting
bolt (D) on each side and remove the two
(2) subframe stays.

Tightening torque for bolts (C):
32.5 – 39.8 lb.ft (44.1 – 53.9 N.m,
4.5 – 5.5 kgf.m)
Tightening torque for bolts (D):
115.7 – 130.2 lb.ft (156.9 – 176.5 N.m,
16.0 – 18.0 kgf.m)

Detach the exhaust pipe hanger (E) from
the subframe.

Support the subframe (F) with a suitable
powertrain lift (G).

Remove the two (2) subframe retaining
nuts (H) and carefully lower the subframe
enough (8-12 inches) to allow for
removal of the steering gear box
heatshield and partial detachment of the
front stabilizer bar.

Tightening torque for nuts (H):
115.7 – 130.2 lb.ft (156.9 – 176.5 N.m,
16.0– 18.0 kgf.m)

Remove the two (2) retaining bolts (I)
and remove the steering gear box heat
shield (J).

Tightening torque for bolts (I):
61.2 – 96 lb.in (6.9 – 10.8 N.m,
0.7 – 1.1 kgf.m)

Remove the one (1) sway bar retaining
nut and one (1) retaining bolt on each
side and swivel the sway bar (K)
upwards. Use a block of wood or
something similar to support the sway
bar in the upward position.

Tightening torque for nut and bolt:
32.5 – 39.8 lb.ft (44.1 – 53.9 N.m,
4.5 – 5.5 kgf.m)

Using the provided 24mm hexagon bit
socket, remove and discard the yoke
plug (L).

 NOTICE
When loosening the plug,
ensure the 24mm socket is
straight and flush with the plug
at all times. Forcibly loosening
the plug with the socket at an
angle and rubbing on the
subframe as shown (M) may
damage the housing threads.
Continue to loosen the plug by
hand.

10. Remove the yoke spring (N) and set
aside for reinstallation.

11. Clean the threads (O) of the yoke
housing with a clean cloth and brake
cleaner. Use compressed air to ensure
the assembly surface is dry and free of
debris.

12. Remove the yoke assembly (P) and
discard.

13. Apply lubricant to the bottom and on the
O-rings of the new improved yoke
assembly (Q).

14. Install the improved yoke body (Q) into
the yoke housing.

15. Reinstall the yoke spring (N) removed in
step 10 of this procedure.

16. Partially install the new yoke plug (R) by
hand to prevent cross-threading of the
plug and housing threads.

17. Tighten and torque the yoke plug (R) to
specifications.

Tightening torque for plug (R):
36.2 lb.ft (49.0 N.m, 5.0 kgf.m)

18. With a marker, mark a line on the
housing in line with groove 1 (white mark
#1) of the plug.

19. Loosen the plug approximately 5/8 of an
inch and align the mark on the housing
with groove 2 (white mark #2) of the
plug.

20. Reinstall all removed components in the
reverse order of removal.
