General Information
The O-rings in the coolant valve of 13- and 23-gallon DEF tanks may take a compression set and leak in extreme cold conditions. An O-ring replacement kit (A04-31573-000) is available for replacing the O-rings in the
valve to fix the leakage issue.

IMPORTANT: Units that are manufactured with the new O-rings will have a yellow dot on the ID plate.
Units that have had the O-rings replaced should have a white dot on the ID plate. In the event of a
leaking solenoid valve, check the unit for a white or yellow dot on the ID plate. See Fig. 6. If the unit
being serviced already has one of these, replace the unit with a new one. If the unit does not have a
yellow or white dot on the ID plate, replace the O-rings following the instructions in "Replacement"
below.

NOTICE
Western Star does not recommend replacing the O-rings if the valve is not leaking.
Use care not to damage the seal surfaces and the O-rings when assembling the valve. Damaged O-rings
will lead to further leaks.

Replacement
1. Park the vehicle on a level surface, set the parking brakes, and shut down the engine. Chock the wheels.
2. Remove the DEF tank from the vehicle if needed. For instructions, refer to Group 49 of the vehicle’s workshop manual.
3. Remove the four bolts and nuts from the solenoid valve. See Fig. 1.
4. Separate the solenoid valve. See Fig. 2 and Fig. 3.

5. Remove the two O-rings from the valve body. See Fig. 4.
6. Using hot water, clean the valve body as needed.

7. Lubricate the new O-rings with the lubricant included in the kit, then install the O-rings.
8. Assemble the solenoid valve and install the bolts and nuts. See Fig. 5. Tighten 35 lbf·in (380 N·cm).

9. Add a white dot to the ID plate to indicate that the valve is reworked. See Fig. 6.
10. Install the DEF tank. For instructions, refer to Group 49 of the vehicle’s workshop manual.

Parts
The O-ring replacement kit (A04-31573-000) is available through the PDCs.

Warranty
This procedure is warrantable only if the described condition exists and the repair is performed within the applicable base or extended coverage warranty period. If a failure is not found, this procedure is considered preventive and warranty does not apply.
