VOLVO has developed a new wiper system to improve the visibility of the hood mirror during
wiper operation on VN model vehicles manufactured from August 8, 2011 to November 22,
2013. The following procedure outlines how to install the new wiper system.

DANGER
Do not attempt to repair or service a vehicle without the proper training, tools and service
information. Failure to do so may result in component damage, serious injury or death.
1 Secure the vehicle for service by parking it on a level surface, applying the parking brake,
chocking the rear wheels, and placing the transmission in neutral.

2 Disconnect all cables from the negative (ground) battery terminals to prevent personal
injury from electrical shock and prevent damage to electrical components.

3 Unlatch and raise the hood.
4 Disconnect the windshield washer hoses.
5 Remove the wiper arm mounting nuts (2) and wiper arms (1).

6 Remove the wiper thru-shaft escutcheons (1).

7 Remove the fasteners (1) and washers (2) securing the cowl (3).

9 Disconnect the washer fluid hose (2) and wiper motor connector (1).

11 Remove the wiper linkage assembly (1).

12 Remove the wiper motor shaft nut (2).

14 Install the wiper motor (1) onto the new wiper linkage assembly with three mounting bolts.
Start all bolts before tightening.
15 Tighten the fasteners to 40–49 Nm (23–36 ft-lb).
16 Install the shaft (2) nut to the linkage arm.
Note: Ensure that the shaft and transmission arm are aligned so that the timing and
placement of the windshield wipers are properly aligned when the windshield wipers are in
the OFF position.
17 Tighten the nut to 10 –13 Nm (90 –115 in-lb).

18 Align the windshield wiper assembly to the cowl, and install with the five fasteners (1).
19 Tighten that fasteners to 23 ± 2.5 Nm (199 ± 22 in-lb).

20 Connect the washer fluid hose (2) and wiper motor connector (1). Secure both with cable
ties.

21 Install the upper center cowl (3), washers (2), and fasteners (1).
22 Tighten the fasteners to 24 ± 4 Nm (212 ± 35 in-lb).

24 Reset the wiper motor. To do this:
1. Turn the ignition key ON.
2. Cycle the wipers.
3. Turn the ignition key OFF.
25 Install the wiper arms (1), and wiper arm mounting nuts (2).
26 Tighten the wiper arm mounting nuts to 23 ±3 Nm (203 ± 26 in-lb).

27 connect the windshield washer hoses.
28 Install the wiper blades [standard wiper (part number 85142563), arctic wiper (part number
85142564)].
29 Check wiper operation.

30 Reconnect all previously removed cables to the negative (ground) and positive battery
terminals.
