VOLVO has developed a new wiper system to improve the visibility of the hood mirror during
wiper operation on VN model vehicles manufactured from August 8, 2011 to November 22,
2013. The following procedure outlines how to install the new wiper system.
Required Parts
1– Wiper Linkage, Part Number 85115752
2 – Wiper Arms, Part Number 85142562
2 – Wiper Blade, Standard, Part Number 85142563

2 – Wiper Blade, Arctic, Part Number 85142564 (Optional)

Procedure

DANGER
Do not attempt to repair or service a vehicle without the proper training, tools and service
information. Failure to do so may result in component damage, serious injury or death.
1 Secure the vehicle for service by parking it on a level surface, applying the parking brake,
chocking the rear wheels, and placing the transmission in neutral.
2 Disconnect all cables from the negative (ground) battery terminals to prevent personal
injury from electrical shock and prevent damage to electrical components.
3 Unlatch and raise the hood.
4 Disconnect the windshield washer hoses and remove the wiper arms.

5 Remove the wiper thru-shaft escutcheons.

10 Install the wiper motor onto the new wiper linkage assembly with three mounting bolts.
Start all bolts before tightening. Torque to 40–49 Nm (23–36 ft-lb). Install the shaft nut to
the linkage arm. Ensure that the shaft and transmission arm are aligned so that the timing
and placement of the windshield wipers are properly aligned when the windshield wipers
are in the OFF position. Torque the nut to 10 –13 Nm (90 –115 in-lb).

11 Align the windshield wiper assembly to the cowl, and install with the five torx bolts. Torque
to 23 ± 2.5 Nm (199 ± 22 in-lb).

12 Connect the washer fluid hose and wiper motor connector. Secure both with cable ties.

13 Install the upper center cowl. Torque the fasteners to 24 ± 4 Nm (212 ± 35 in-lb).

14 Install the wiper thru-shaft escutcheons.

15 Reset the wiper motor. To do this:
1. Turn the ignition key ON.
2. Cycle the wipers.
3. Turn the ignition key OFF.

16 Install the wiper arms and connect the windshield washer hoses. Torque the mounting nuts
to 23 ±3 Nm (203 ± 26 in-lb).

17 Install the wiper blades [standard wiper (part number 85142563), arctic wiper (part number
85142564)].
18 Check wiper operation.
19 Reconnect all previously removed cables to the negative (ground) and positive battery
terminals.
