Cab Side Fairing Brackets Failure

FSB 891-018, Cab Side Fairing Brackets Failure

(May 2013)

Certain VOLVO VN and VT vehicles may experience issues with cab side fairing brackets

failing, or cracks in the cab at the lower fairing mounting bracket. To resolve this issue, install

the re-enforcing kit per the procedure outlined in this document.

Procedure

You must read and understand the precautions and guidelines in Service Information,

Function Group 80, "General Safety Practices, Cab" before performing this procedure. If

you are not properly trained and certified in this procedure, ask your supervisor for training

before you perform it.

Note: Complete this procedure for the both the left and right hand cab side fairings.
DANGER

Do not attempt to repair or service a vehicle without the proper training, tools and service

information. Failure to do so may result in component damage, serious injury or death.
WARNING

Exhaust system components can be hot. Contact with hot components can cause severe

personal injury. Allow the exhaust system to cool before working with exhaust system

components.

Note: This procedure applies to both sides of the vehicle.

1 Secure the vehicle for service by parking it on a flat level surface, applying the parking

brake, chocking the rear wheel, and placing the transmission in neutral.

2 Disconnect all cables from the negative (ground) and positive battery terminals to prevent

personal injury from electrical shock and prevent damage to electrical components.

from the fairing).

CAUTION

To avoid component damage, when assembling the reinforcement bracket use the

correct fastener length.

Assemble and install the reinforcement bracket and spacer on the upper fairing mounting

bracket. Torque the fasteners to 24 ± 4 Nm (18 ± 3 ft-lb).

Note: Various component combinations can exist for the upper fairing bracket. For the

combination including w/ grab handle and w/ light bracket use bolt M8*49 (995806). For

combination including w/ grab handle only use bolt M8*40 (part number 20731329) and

washer 8,6*22*1,5 (part number 8081375). For combination of without grab handle and

without light bracket re-use existing hardware.

Note: For the inside connection where the bracket secures to the cab use Bolt M8*70

(995472) and spacer (part number 9515891).

CAUTION

To avoid component damage, when assembling the reinforcement bracket use the

correct fastener length.

Install the lower fairing bracket. Tighten the fasteners loosely.

Note: Reuse existing mounting hardware. Also, add bolt 995463 (M8*25) and washer

994848 (8.4*22*2) to secure the bracket to underside of the cab.

Note: Install the fasteners from front to rear to make the installation easier.

9 Torque the lower fairing bracket fasteners to 24 ± 4 Nm (18 ± 3 ft-lb).

10 Install all previously removed cables to the ground (negative) battery terminals.
