Summary
VAS 6160C Diagnostic Tablet Unpacking and Setup Instructions
Initial startup must be performed with the tablet removed from the docking station (port replicator) and
the wireless switch in the OFF position. Additional information can be found in the Panasonic CF-D1
Operating Manual.
1. On the upper left-hand side of the tablet, open the access cover marked “SC / EX”. If necessary, slide
the wireless operation switch to the OFF position -arrow-:
Connect the A/C power adapter cable to a 115V A/C outlet and the DC IN 15.6V port -arrow- on the lower
right-hand side of the tablet:

8.2 - Interface Connections
For additional information, on interface connections, refer to the Panasonic CF-D1 and docking station
(port replicator) Operating Manuals.
8.3 - Switching the Unit On and Off
Switch on the tablet by pressing the on/off button for approximately 1 second. The tablet boots and
displays a series of automatic setup, registry and service screens followed by the initial Windows setup
screen. No user intervention is required during this time.
Caution!
•
When switching the tablet off after normal use, DO NOT press and hold the on/off button for
longer than 5 seconds! This executes a forced shutdown which may result in hard drive faults.
•
To switch off the tablet after normal use, click the Windows “Start” symbol from the desktop and
then select “Shut down”.
8.4 – Windows 7 Professional Initial Setup
Note:
The initial language selection and license agreement screens may or may not appear after initial
startup. If prompted, select the language carefully to avoid having to perform a recovery!
After the initial Windows setup screens are displayed…
1. If the following Windows setup screen appears, carefully scroll down and select My language is
English and click Next: …otherwise, skip to Step 2.

8.4.1 – Delete Non-Applicable Information
The Windows 7 desktop includes documents that are not applicable to the -US/CDN- market. Please
delete these documents as follows:

From the Windows desktop: Locate two document shortcut icons entitled:
HowTo Guide_ODIS Service Set-Up_EN and HowTo Guide_ODIS Service Set-Up_DE:
2. Right-click a shortcut icon, and then select Delete from the dropdown.
3. When prompted to confirm file delete, click Yes. Repeat for the remaining icon.

8.4.2 – Confirm Keyboard Language

8.4.4 – Restart Windows
A restart is required to complete automatic Windows configurations. Proceed as follows, and note the
Windows 7 Shut down and Restart routines for future reference:

8.5 – Docking Station (port replicator) Connection
The tablet and A/C power adapter can now be transferred to the docking station (port replicator).
The connector array for the docking station on new VAS 6160C tablets is covered to prevent damage
during shipping and initial handling.

We recommend connecting a USB mouse and keyboard for the remaining setup.
Caution!
Whenever the tablet is separated from the base station (port replicator) for extended periods, we
recommend closing the connector array cover to prevent damage.
8.6 – Windows Update Settings & Internet Explorer Version Requirement

9.0 – Network Setup
9.1 – Set Computer Name
If more than one VAS diagnostic device is connected to the dealership network, each device must be
assigned a different computer name.
Assign the computer name before proceeding. For detailed instructions refer to Service Information –

9.2 – Enable Network Configurations
For dealership networks using DHCP for Internet access, no network connection configuration is
necessary (the device default setting is DHCP). If the dealership network uses DHCP for Internet access,
skip to Section 9.3 below.
For networks using Static IP configurations for Internet access, the IP configurations must be renewed by
manual entry of the dealership-specific IPs. Ask your dealership systems administrator or IT professional
for details and assistance.
If the device is to be used over a wireless LAN connection, switch the wireless switch to the ON position
and perform the required wireless configuration at this time. Ask your dealership systems administrator or
IT professional for details and assistance.
9.3 – Additional Information
Before proceeding to use the VAS 6160C, please read the "Panasonic CF-D1 Series Operating
Manual", containing additional important information regarding the unit, its accessories and its care.

10.0 – Install Offboard Diagnostic Information System Service (ODIS Service)
Dealerships are responsible for requesting an ODIS Service license, and then installing and configuring
the latest “installation version” of ODIS Service.
A security certificate to enable vehicle Software Version Management (SVM) and module adaptations must
also be requested and installed, and the Infomedia setup procedure performed.

11.0 – VAS 6154 Diagnostic Interface Setup
11.1 – General information
The VAS 6154 Diagnostic Interface is powered by the vehicle Data Link Connector (DLC) when
connected, and communicates with the tablet and the diagnostic software via Wi-Fi or USB cable.

11.2 – VAS 6154 USB (cabled) Operation
If the tablet is used to perform Software Version Management (SVM) flash procedures or ant-theft
immobilizer adaptations, a USB (cabled) connection must be used between the VAS 6154 and the
tablet. This ensures an uninterrupted data stream.
Prior to first use with a USB cable, the tablet and transmitter head must be configured for USB
(cabled) operation.

For USB (cabled) connection of VAS 6160C to VAS 6154, the supplied USB cable is of the
Rugged USB 2.0 type. A circular, secure (locked) connection is used.
•
On the lower right-hand side of the tablet, open the cover for the Rugged USB 2.0 port and
connect by lining up the two dots and inserting the connection straight into the port -arrow 1-:

12.0 – Windows 7 Updates
12.1 – General Information
All VAS diagnostic devices must be kept up-to-date with the latest Windows security and vulnerability
updates. However, dealership service or IT personnel tasked with maintaining both ODIS Service and
Windows updates must be aware of the following, and act accordingly:
• The initial package of important Windows updates available for this Windows 7 installation may take
considerable time to install and download (typically between 60 – 120 minutes, device, content and
bandwidth dependent). As a result, we recommend that the initial selection, download and installation of
Windows updates be managed so that the update process takes place outside of workshop
service hours.
Instructions on how select and initiate Windows updates follow in the Managed Windows Update
section below.
12.2 – Managed Windows Update Procedure

Additional Windows update configurations are performed during the shut-down and restart routine.

On completion, the device boots to the Windows desktop, and an information prompt on the
installed updates appears.
13.0 – Warranty Registration
A formal warranty registration process for new tablets for warranty coverage is no longer necessary.
The device serial number was automatically registered with the US/CDN market service provider for
warrantable repairs at the time of purchase.
In case of warranty repair requests, please provide the serial number of the device to the VWGoA DTSS
consultant at the toll-free number listed below.
14.0 – Malfunctions and Support
Should performance or functional issues occur after placing the device into service, please attempt to
identify and localize as accurately as possible. Try to determine if the symptom is a result of the
Panasonic CF-D1 tablet hardware, Windows operating system, ODIS Service software or dealership
network (for internet connectivity). Then proceed as follows:
•
For tablet hardware and Windows system issues, consult the information in the
"Troubleshooting" chapter in the Panasonic CF-D1 Operating Manual.
Also review the latest Service Information and FAQ documents in the Diagnostic Device
Hardware & Windows document subcategory of the Vehicle Diagnostics section in ServiceNet.
The issue may be previously known and a resolution already published.
