Initial publication

• The coolant temperature warning light is on.
• The coolant level in the coolant expansion tank is close to or below minimum.
• The customer had to top off the coolant several times.

Technical Background
Air gets into the cooling system during production or when refilled during previous repairs. As this air escapes, the
coolant level in the coolant expansion tank can drop below the minimum. A drop of the coolant level because of air
in the system is possible even after the vehicle has exceeded 15,000 miles. Because of the remaining air, the
coolant level can drop a few times.

1. Double-check the cooling system to ensure that there are
no leaks causing the condition. Use the instructions in the
Elsa repair manual:
• If no leak is found, top off the coolant level to the mark
(Figure 1). No repair is necessary. Explain the
Technical Background to the customer.
• If a leak is found, repair the cooling system according to
the repair manual.

Tip: When a hot coolant expansion tank is opened, rising or bubbling coolant can be normal on engines
with intelligent thermal management (ITM) cooling systems, as ITM works at coolant temperatures over 100°C
(212°F). On cooling systems with ITM, CO2-leakage testers (such as Leitenberger LT200 ) will not detect a
leak because the test fluid always discolors in these systems.
2. After repairing the cooling system, perform the top-off and bleeding of the coolant system according to the
instructions in the Elsa repair manual and on the diagnostic tester.
