05MY-15MY CONVENTIONAL J08 ENGINE CYLINDER HEAD GASKET
OVERVIEW
A subject vehicle may exhibit an engine oil leak or engine coolant leaking externally from the engine head
gasket sealing area on the exhaust manifold side of the engine. An improved head gasket has been made
available as a service part and should be used if replacement of the head gasket is necessary. Improvement of
the head gasket includes the addition of rubber seals around the engine oil and engine coolant port holes.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Should it become necessary to perform any operation where the cylinder head gasket will need to be
replaced this new design head gasket should be used.
2. Refer to section “EN02-001 Engine Mechanical (J08E)” for disassembly, inspection and assembly
procedures.
NOTICE: Do not use any abrasive wheels of any type to clean the head gasket sealing surface of
the cylinder head or engine block. Use caution to avoid scratching, gouging or removing any
steel from these surfaces.

3. In rare cases, corrosion or fretting may occur around the engine oil return ports and engine coolant ports.
There are 24 corresponding ports which are located on the cylinder head and engine block. The locations
correspond to the rubber seals which were added to the new design head gasket. Refer to the corresponding
locations using the new cylinder head gasket as a template.

FINAL INSPECTION
1. To complete this technical service bulletin, review the bulletin and confirm the following:
 All fasteners have been torqued per section “EN02-001 Engine Mechanical (J08E)” of
the engine workshop manual.
 Engine cooling system has been refilled and air bled off to prevent any overheating
conditions.
 There are no fuel leaks, exhaust leaks, external engine oil or external engine coolant
leaks.
NOTE: This procedure is provided as technical information and is not an authorization for a
warranty repair.
