Cause of Fault in Power Distributor (in front left wire harness): Rework Required (21/14)

Information:

In the event of complaints relating to the overall power supply on the vehicle and if
“Connections in power distributor corroded” is discovered as the cause of the fault, the cover
on the power distributor ( Figure 1) must be sealed using new sealant.
Complaints can include various malfunctions in the vehicle electrics (fault in PCM, failure of power
windows or similar problems) or various error messages displayed in the instrument cluster.

Introduction:

The cover on the power distributor has been sealed with Union cement during production since the end of
August 2012.

Action
Required:

Clean corroded parts of the power distributor and seal the sealing face for the power distributor cover
with "Union cement" sealant.

Parts Info:

000.043.209.38 – NEW –  Union cement (Terostat – sealing adhesive)

Tools:

- Wire brush
- Clean cloth
- Isopropanol (commercially available)

Work Procedure: 1

Disconnect the battery, see Workshop Manual  Workshop Manual '2X00IN Work instructions after
disconnecting the battery - section on "Disconnecting"'.

Remove rear part of front left wheel housing liner, see Workshop Manual  Workshop Manual
'505619 Removing and installing front wheel housing liner - section on "Removing"'.

Unscrew and remove fastening screw for the power distributor.

Press power distributor towards the center of the vehicle, thereby removing it from the bracket.

Unclip locking lugs on the cover of the power distributor.

Unscrew and remove fastening nuts on the fuses.

Clean corroded contacts using a wire brush.

Secure the fuses again with the fastening nuts.

Clean the sealing face with a clean cloth and isopropanol and remove any remaining bits of the old
seal.

10 Using the tube, apply a thin, but consistent bead of Union cement sealing adhesive over the entire
sealing face ( Figure 2).

11 Install the cover for the power distributor evenly and clip it in.
12 Remove any excess Union cement that seeps out of the power distributor using a clean cloth.
13 Fit the power distributor into the bracket.
14 Screw in fastening screw for the power distributor.

16 Connect the battery, see Workshop Manual  Workshop Manual '2X00IN Work instructions after
disconnecting the battery - section on "Connecting"'.

"97090 – Sub-part of front left wire harness" as the fault location (FES5) and
"3311 – Surface corrosion" as the damage category (SA4).
