Service Procedure:
NOTE: An authorization number is required prior to performing the service procedure.
1. Obtain authorization number from Allison Transmission prior to performing this service procedure. Refer
to the Authorization section.
2. Determine whether parameter 29080: J1939 SA: EBC1 Engine Retarder Selection is set to 254 (Autodetect)
or 33 (Body Controller).
a. Stop the vehicle and place the transmission in Park/Neutral.
b. Connect Allison DOC® to the TCM. Take care to record all the current Customer Modifiable Constant
(CMC) settings in the the TCM.
c. Select Calibration Information in the left side menu (refer to Figure 1).

d. Select Additional Calibration Information at the bottom right of the screen (refer to Figure 2).

3. If 29080: J1939 SA: EBC1 Engine Retarder Selection is set to 254, proceed to Step 4. If 29080: J1939 SA:
EBC1 Engine Retarder Selection is set to 33, proceed to Step 6.
4. J1939 SA: EBC1 Engine Retarder Selection = 254. Update the TCM calibration using Allison TCM ReflashTM
as follows:
a. Confirm the vehicle is stopped and the transmission is in Park/Neutral.
NOTE: Make sure all current CMC settings are recorded. After reflashing, the CMCs will be reset to
factory defaults. Use the recorded values to set the CMCs back to the values as received.
b. Close Allison DOC®.
c. Using Allison TCM ReflashTM, reflash the TCM with the Road Ready TCM Assembly number
corresponding to the VIN of the vehicle being serviced. Refer to Table 1 in the above "Affected
Population" section. The system will correct the calibration setting in TCMs associated with the VINs
that have been included in the DTNA notification.
5. After the TCM update, close Allison TCM ReflashTM and launch Allison DOC®. Repeat Steps 2.a through
2.e to confirm that the setting for J1939 SA: EBC1 Engine Retarder Selection is now showing 33. If the
value is 33, skip Step 6 and proceed to Step 7. If J1939 SA: EBC1 Engine Retarder Selection is not 33,
stop the service procedure and contact the Allison Technical Assistance Center (TAC) at 18002525283
for further instructions.

NOTE: If an engine warning light is set during this procedure, it can be turned off by starting the engine
and letting it idle until the dash warning lights go off; run the engine up to 1500 RPM, return to idle, and
turn the engine off. Repeat this procedure 3 to 5 times, depending on the engine manufacturer.
6. J1939 SA: EBC1 Engine Retarder Selection = 33. The TCM has the correct setting. Perform the following
procedure to verify that the correct calibration setting is in the Allison system:
a. Confirm the vehicle is stopped and the transmission is in Park/Neutral.
b. Connect Allison DOC® to the TCM.
c. Display the Action Request menu.
d. Click on the Upload Current TCM Configuration menu item. The Upload Current TCM Configuration
window displays as shown in Figure 4.

e. Click the “Upload” button. The Status box updates with progress information as shown in Figure 5.

NOTE: If you are not connected to the internet, the error message displayed in Figure 6 will appear.
Allison DOC® will retrieve the file and attempt to upload the file the next time the application starts with
internet access.

f. Click the “Close” button after receiving indication of success or error message. The progress window
for reestablishing TCM connection displays as shown in Figure 7.

7. Verify operation of the Engine Brake Preselect feature as follows:
a. With the Engine Brake enabled via the dash switch, operate the vehicle in the maximum range allowed
by the calibration.
b. Let off of the throttle to signal to the engine brake controller that engine braking is requested.
c. When off of the throttle, verify that the transmission is preselecting down to the range or ranges
determined by the "Customer Modifiable Constant (CMC) settings for Engine Brake: Minimum
Preselect Range and Engine Brake: Alternate Minimum Preselect Range".
8. If internet access was not available during the service procedure, log onto Allison TCM ReflashTM as soon as
internet access is available. Go to the File menu and select Upload Logs to return verification (VER) file(s)
to the Allison database. This will allow confirmation of the new settings and ensure that future service
events will use the proper settings.
Authorization:
Perform the following procedure to obtain an authorization number:
Log on to the Allison Transmission Extranet. Under the “Service” heading, click on “Field Action Authorization”
and enter the transmission serial number.
If the requested serial number does not return an authorization number on the Allison Transmission Extranet, this
indicates the recalibration has already been performed or the serial number is not covered under the DTNA’s
Service Bulletin.
If an authorization number is returned, record the authorization number and include it in the claim narrative in
Allison Warranty Administration and Analysis Reporting Environment (AWAARE) for reimbursement.
