The driver’s side rear rear axle shaft may be too long. This may cause the inner face of the
axle shaft to rub against the spider pins.

313 chassis (all U.S. and no Canada) equipped with Rear Rear Axle. See the attached
chassis list for specific chassis.
For vehicles found with damaged Rear Rear Axles not included in the attached chassis list
for this campaign, use the procedures in this bulletin to start an OnTrac case to obtain parts.
Action
Service all chassis affected that enter your dealership, even if the customer has no issue
with the chassis.
1. Review the attached chassis list for your dealer code and schedule your customer(s)
for service if their chassis is on the list.
2. Review the DWWC or SIR for “Complete” next to the “A001” campaign code prior to
performing this repair.
3. Follow the procedures below to inspect for damage and repair as needed.
This campaign can be performed at any time convenient for the customer (for example:
during next scheduled maintenance interval).

returned to manufacturer. The supplier will arrange parts pickup with the dealer through the
case created for each vehicle.

PACCAR
Parts Customer Service will be in contact with your dealership’s Parts Manager to
provide the required parts needed to service your customers for this campaign. The carriers,
axle shafts, and reseal kits are on reserve and cannot be purchased through normal
methods. These parts cannot be ordered without contacting PACCAR Parts Customer
Service and providing a Meritor OnTrac case number.
To better service the impacted customers for your service area location there will be a
required initial stocking order (a pre-determined number of carriers, axle shafts, and re-seal
kits—the quantity will be managed jointly through PACCAR
Parts and Meritor) that PACCAR![]()
Parts will work with you to place the order. This order will be expedited to ensure you have
pre-stock on hand before your customers will be contacted to schedule the service
inspection process and possible repair with your dealership.
Standard PDC orders may be placed for the inspection parts listed below if stock is needed.

1. Contact the PACCAR Parts line at 1-800-944-0251 and when prompted, select
option 4, and you will be routed to a Meritor
representative. Provide the Meritor
representative with the VIN #, axle serial #, and mileage to confirm that the unit
requires inspection. The call center will provide a case # for tracking purposes.

hand prior to starting the inspection.

3. Use the procedure in the attachments section to inspect and/or repair the axle
assembly.
You may encounter three possible scenarios with this inspection.
• Axle shaft is not contacting the spider shaft.
• Axle shaft is contacting the spider shaft, but there is only rubbing
damage. Metal debris is isolated to the carrier area of the axle housing.
• Axle shaft is contacting the spider shaft and the spider shaft and/or
carrier is damaged. Metal debris may be spread through the axle housing
and may require extensive cleaning and possible hub replacement.

Park the vehicle on a level surface. Block the wheels to prevent the vehicle from
moving. Support the vehicle with safety stands. Do not work under a vehicle
supported only by jacks. Jacks can slip and fall over. Serious personal injury and
damage to components can result

To prevent serious eye injury, always wear safe eye protection when you perform
vehicle maintenance or service.
CAUTION
Use a brass or soft-faced mallet for assembly and disassembly procedures. Do not
hit steel parts with a steel hammer. Pieces of a part can break off. Serious personal
injury and damage to components can result.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
Overview
This repair procedure has been developed to find and correct possible damage to the internal
drive axle components of the rear rear axle that could have occurred due to an axle shaft
interference condition.
The process below does not apply to the forward rear axle. It only applies to the rear rear of
the tandem.
Only perform this procedure on the axle(s) identified in the chassis list.
Preparation
1. Contact the PACCAR
Parts line at 1-800-944-0251 and when prompted, select
option 4, and you will be routed to a Meritor
representative. Provide the Meritor![]()
representative with the VIN #, axle serial #, and mileage to confirm that the unit
requires inspection. The call center will provide a case # for tracking purposes.

Picture quality
Photos must be submitted for this campaign. The area of interest in the photos must be in
focus. If the area of interest is not in focus, you may be asked to retake and resubmit the
photos.
Use the macro mode on your camera, and move your camera as close as practical to the
object when you take the photo. Some cameras and camera phones have a feature that
allows you to tap on an area in the view screen to concentrate focus. If so, then tap on the
end of the axle or the writing on the axle flange in your view screen when you take your
photos.
Example photos are provided in this document. The photos that you submit for the claim
should be very similar to the example photos.
Inspection procedure
1. Park the vehicle on a level surface.
2. Ensure that the hub fill plug is in a horizontal position.
3. Block the wheels to prevent the vehicle from moving. Set the parking brake.
4. Raise the driver’s side of the rear rear axle so the oil will drain towards the
passenger side.
5. Place a catch container under the axle flange to catch the oil that drains after
removing the axle. You will need to add an amount of new oil to the hub equal to the
amount of captured oil.
6. Remove the left (driver’s side) rear rear axle shaft and axle shaft gasket.
a. Remove the stud nuts and washers from the flanges of the axle shaft.
b. Slide the axle shaft out of the axle hub.
c. Discard the axle shaft gasket.

7. Inspect the condition of the inboard end of the axle shaft. See the sample photos
below. Notice the original untouched rough appearance of the inboard end of the
axle shaft in the no contact photo as compared to the smoother appearance of the
contact example photo.
Does the axle shaft show contact with the main differential cross shaft?

No=
a. Update the call center via phone or email (OnTrac@ Meritor.com) to
report the results. Email a photo of the inboard end of the shaft and the
date code, located on the flange, to the call center. See the example
photos below. See Picture quality for an explanation of how to take
acceptable photos. Include the case # and “Rear rear axle” in the subject
line of the email. The call center will provide a case including an
authorization code for claim submittal.
b. Go to Install the Axle Shaft on page 13 to install the axle.

Prime and paint the new lock nuts and repair paint damage to the hub
and axle flange.
•
Unsure= Email photos of the inboard end of the shaft and the date code on
the flange to OnTrac@ Meritor.com noting the case # and ”Rear rear axle” in
the subject line. The call center will provide interpretation guidance.

Yes= The carrier and axle shaft must be replaced. Submit clear photos of
the inboard end of the axle shaft and date code on the flange of the shaft to
the call center for case documentation. Continue to the Disassembly
procedure on the next page.

Disassembly
NOTE
ONLY perform this Disassembly procedure when directed by OnTrac.
1. Remove the right (passenger side) rear rear axle shaft and axle shaft gasket
a. Remove the stud nuts and washers from the flanges of both axle shafts.
b. Slide the axle shaft out of the axle hub.
c. Discard the axle shaft gasket
2. Place a large container under the axle.
3. Remove the drain plug from the bottom of the axle housing. Drain and discard the
oil as per federal regulations.
4. Remove the yoke nut, washer, and yoke itself. Assure the yoke is in good condition
for re-use on the replacement carrier.
a. Use the correct tool to hold the yoke in place. Remove the yoke nut and
washer.
NOTE
If special yoke/flange driver tool, tool kit number MST-YT114 is
not available, retain this nut. The nut can be modified, as detailed in
Alternative yoke installation method on Page 12, to be used in place
of the special tool.

b. Use a yoke puller or other suitable tool to remove the yoke from the input
shaft/pinion.
c. Ensure that the sleeve from the seal is not stuck on the yoke shaft.
5. Place a hydraulic roller jack under the differential carrier to support the assembly.
6. Remove all but the top two carrier-to-housing capscrews or stud nuts and
washers.
7. Loosen, but do not remove, the top two carrier
-to-housing fasteners. The fasteners
will hold the carrier in the housing.

8. Loosen the differential carrier in the axle housing. Use a plastic mallet to hit the
carrier mounting flange at several points.
9. After the carrier is loosened, remove the top two stud nuts and washers that hold
the assembly in the axle housing.
CAUTION
When using a pry bar, be careful not to damage the carrier
or housing flange.
Damage to these surfaces will cause oil leaks.
10. Use the hydraulic roller jack to remove the carrier
from the axle housing. Use a pry
bar that has a round end to help remove the carrier from the housing.
Clean the housing
1. If the axle was only rubbing on the spider pinions and no significant metal
debris is found; clean the carrier
housing.

Clean the four magnets in the carrier housing.
•
Clean the magnets on the drain and fill plugs.
