Subject:

Oil Leak From Timing Belt Upper Front Cover

Models:

2014-2015 Chevrolet Cruze
2014-2015 Chevrolet Sonic
2014-2015 Chevrolet Trax
Equipped with 1.8L 2H0, LUW or LWE (US and Canada Only)

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern
A customer concern of engine oil leak may be isolated to the timing belt upper front cover.

Recommendation/Instructions
Remove the timing belt upper front cover and inspect for signs of engine oil in the camshaft position actuator and
timing belt area. (This is a dry area and should not show signs of oil residue)
If found, then clean any residual oil from the camshaft position actuators.
Using paper, run the engine off idle at 2000 RPM to check for oil being ejected from the camshasft actuator covers.

The oil on the paper in the picture below was seen after approximately 30 seconds of operation at 2000 RPM.
The arrows in the picture below indicate the area of the potential leak. (Second picture below)

If oil is ejected from the camshaft position actuators, then replace the leaking actuator or actuators and the
timing belt.
Retest for the condition.
