Maxon BMRA and BMRA-CS Platform Closing Cylinder Hose
Inspection and Replacement

Scope: Maxon has discovered that a select group of BMRA and BMRA-CS model
liftgates have experienced premature wear and failure of the Platform Closing Cylinder
Hose. The hose is rubbing against the retainer bolt and collar resulting in a leak or
rupture of the hose.
Affected: BMRA and BMRA-CS model liftgates built between May 2013 and December
2015
Verification: Maxon has provided a spreadsheet of the affected liftgate serial numbers
which has been saved on www.UTM.com under the Field Service tab inside the
Warranty Information folder. Once in the folder, you can search by, “Maxon BMRA
Platform Closing Cylinder” in the Description field. If you suspect one of your customers
to be affected please contact and obtain the liftgate serial number.
File a claim: Once the liftgate has been verified to be affected, please contact Maxon
representative, Ricardo Vasquez at (800) 227-4116 or email [email protected].
Please provide the Trailer serial number and the liftgate serial number. Maxon will send
out the upgrade kit at no charge, this will be sent 3 day ground. They have agreed to
pay 1 hour labor which will be handled direct with Maxon

Dear Maxon BMRA Liftgate Customer; RE: Closing Cylinder Hose (264109)
Maxon has discovered that a select group of BMRA and BMRA-CS model liftgates built between May 2013 and
December 2015 have experienced premature wear and failure of the Platform Closing Cylinder Hose (P/N 264109). This
wear will result in the hose rubbing against the retainer bolt and collar, creating a wear point resulting in a leak or rupture
of the hose. Our records show that you have purchased one or more of these liftgates. The Serial Number and models of
the units you purchased are attached.
Inspection and replacement of the Closing Cylinder Hose is required as soon as reasonably feasible, without waiting for
your next scheduled maintenance inspection. Please contact your local authorized Maxon distributor or liftgate
maintenance provider. A technician with average mechanical and hand tools will be able to perform the necessary repair.
If you need us to assist you in locating a repair facility, please contact Maxon at the number provided below.
Maxon will provide a Upgrade Kit free of charge upon confirmation of the liftgate serial number and location of the units
being updated, and will reimburse labor as specified. Refer to BMRA Hose Upgrade Kit (Account 5400-628245-000100) when ordering and making claims. The Kit (P/N 297861-01) includes all hardware and instructions to perform the
change. Installation of the kit is estimated to take approximately 1.0 hour or less. The repair facility will be reimbursed at
the prevailing regional shop labor rate upon receipt and notification of the completion and invoice for each repaired
BMRA.
Anyone with identified liftgates in their possession should immediately contact [email protected] or Ricardo
Vasquez with Maxon Customer Service at 800-227-4116, referring to the BMRA Hose Kit. If you have had this hose
replaced previously, the lift gate still requires this updated kit.
Note: Adherence to all current operating instructions, warnings, and precautions shown in the BMRA Operator’s
and Maintenance Manuals supplied with the liftgate ensures that in the event of the hose failure there will be no
damage to equipment or personnel. However, a failure of the hose could result in one or more of the following:
• The operator’s inability to fold and stow the platform once opened.
• The sudden opening of the platform when lowering from the stowed position.
• Potential injury to the liftgate operator, his helpers, or bystanders if they fail to stand outside the area the platform will open
into.

CAUTION
Keep dirt, water and other contaminants from entering the hydraulic system.
Before opening the hydraulic fluid reservoir filler cap, drain plug and hydraulic lines, clean up contaminants that can get in the openings. Also, protect the
openings from accidental contamination.
NOTE: The following procedure contains instructions for replacing a spring guard,
carrier, or sleeved hose and cable assembly with this sleeved hose and
cable kit.
NOTE: Perform this procedure at a place where platform can be lowered to lowest
point of travel. Get a helper to operate Liftgate control switch.
NOTE: Refer to Operation Manual for instructions to operate Liftgate.

REMOVE OLD HOSE AND CABLE
1. Remove retainer screw,
spacer tube, and lock nut from
RH column (FIG. 3-1). Keep
clamp in place on the cable.
If necessary, reposition cable
and hoses for easier access.
Keep the old screw, and spacer
tube. Discard the lock nut.

2. Disconnect the hydraulic hose
in the column from the closing
line fitting (FIG. 3-1). Plug hose
to prevent spills.

5. Remove retainer screw, spacer tube,
nut, and lock nut from RH runner
(FIG. 4-1). Keep clamp in place on the
cable. If necessary, reposition cable
and hoses for easier access. Discard
the old screw, spacer tube, and lock
nut.

6. Disconnect the hydraulic hose in the
runner from the closing cylinder fitting
(FIG. 4-1). Plug hose to prevent spills.

7. Disconnect the runner switch cable
from the flexible cable connector
(FIG. 4-1).

RH runner as shown in FIG. 5-1.

cable connector to the flexible

CAUTION

protect the openings from accidental contamination.
Never mix synthetic fluids with conventional hydraulic fluids. Hydraulic system must be purged if the fluids are mixed.
NOTE: Exxon Univis HVI-13 hydraulic fluid is recommended for operating temperatures of -40 to +120° F. Refer to decal in pump box. The ISO-15
fluids in TABLE 9-1 may be used if the recommended fluids are unavailable. If necessary, the ISO-32 fluids in TABLE 9-2 may be used where
ordinary seasonal temperatures are near +100° F or higher.
NOTE: If the hydraulic fluid in the reservoir is contaminated, do the CHANGING
HYDRAULIC FLUID procedure in the Maintenance Manual.
1. Stow the platform in the up
position (FIG. 8-1).
2. Open the pump box cover to
gain access to the sight glass
and filler cap (FIG. 8-2).
NOTE: Information for checking
hydraulic fluid level is
also shown on a decal
inside the pump box
cover.

3. Check the hydraulic fluid level in
sight glass (FIG. 8-2). Hydraulic fluid
level should be at the center of sight
glass. If fluid is below the center,
add fluid to the reservoir as follows.
Remove filler cap (FIG. 8-2). Add
the correct grade of hydraulic fluid
to reservoir until the level is at the
center of the sight glass (FIG. 8-2).

4. Reinstall filler cap (FIG. 8-2) and
close the pump box cover.

5. Bleed the air from closing cylinder as
follows. With platform folded (FIG. 10-1),
bleed closing line by loosening closing
line fitting (FIG. 10-2) and pushing the
FOLD switch until air is bled from line.
Then, tighten closing line fitting.

6. Repeat the CHECKING HYDRAULIC
FLUID procedure again to ensure
