SERVICE INFORMATION
Some customers may want to use a coolant heater (engine block heater) for their vehicle
when ambient temperatures are below 32°F (0°C).
2016 Titan XD:
 Some were not equipped from the factory with a coolant heater or cord.
 Some were equipped with coolant heater, but not a cord.
2017 Titan XD: Was equipped from the factory with a coolant heater, but some were
not equipped with the coolant heater cord.
If a customer chooses to purchase the parts and labor for installation of a coolant heater
and/or coolant heater cord, use the Service Procedure in this bulletin for installation
instructions.
NOTE:

Refer to Owner’s Manual for coolant heater (engine block heater) operation
instructions.



Coolant heaters (engine block heaters) will operate continuously when plugged into
the correct voltage electrical socket. Operate coolant heater only when the ambient
temperature is below 32°F (0°C).



When using the coolant heater the vehicle should be parked on a level surface. If a
level surface is not available, the vehicle should be parked with the front of the
vehicle lower than the rear (nose down).
CAUTION: Use of the coolant heater when parked with the front of the vehicle
higher than the rear (5 degrees or more) may cause the coolant heater to
become damaged and/or inoperative.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Record (write down) any customer settings that will be lost when the battery is
disconnected.


Refer to the Electronic Service Manual (ESM) section PG-Power Supply, Ground,
& Circuit Elements, for a listing of systems that may lose settings or memory when
disconnecting the 12V battery.
 Look in the PG section index for ADDITIONAL SERVICE WHEN REMOVING
BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL.
 This list often includes items such as audio, HVAC, power windows, clock,
etc.

2. Disconnect the negative battery cable from both batteries.

3. Remove the left side (driver side) battery from the vehicle.


If needed, refer to the ESM, Section PG-Power Supply, Ground, & Circuit Elements,
for battery removal.

4. Drain the engine coolant (if coolant heater is being installed).


Refer to the ESM, Section CO-Engine Cooling System, for coolant draining
information.



Drain the coolant into a clean drain pan. The drained coolant will be
reused/reinstalled back into the cooling system.
CAUTION: Do not spill coolant on the drive belt.

5. Unbolt the power steering pump from its
mounting bracket.


Do not drain the power steering
fluid. The pump just needs to be
moved to access the coolant heater
port.



Refer to the Electronic Service
Manual (ESM), Section ST-Steering
System, for pump removal
information.



Figure 1 shows the power steering
pump positioned out of the way.

NOTE:
 With the power steering pump
positioned out of the way, you will
have access to the coolant heater
port plug shown in Figure 2.
 Steps 6, 7 and 8 are needed only if a
coolant heater is being installed.

6. Remove the coolant heater port plug;
use a 12 mm hex tool.

7. Thoroughly clean the threads of the
coolant heater port with a clean rag.


Make sure there are no burrs, metal
shavings, or sharp edges that can
cut the O-ring on the coolant heater.

8. Install the coolant heater into the
coolant heater port.


Coolant heater is listed in the Parts
Information.



Make sure the O-ring is installed on
the coolant heater.

Tighten the coolant heater to:
55 N·m (5.6 kg-m, 41 ft-lb).

9. Attach the coolant heater cord bracket as shown in Figure 5.


The cord bracket and bolt are listed in the Parts Information.



Use the new bolt – discard the bolt that is removed from this location.



Bolt torque: 24 - 32 N·m (2.44 - 3.26 kg-m, 18 - 23 ft-lb)

10. Attach the coolant heater cord to the
coolant heater.

Tighten the securing ring finger
tight.



The cord has 2 pins. It can be
connected either way.

NOTE: Do not apply power to the
coolant heater until the cooling system
is filled, and the engine has run long
enough for the thermostat to open and
allow air to escape.

11. Route and connect the coolant heater cord as show in Figures 7 through 10.

12. Re-install all parts removed in reverse order.


Refer to the ESM as needed for re-assembly.

13. Re-fill the engine coolant.


Refer to the ESM, section CO-Cooling System, for coolant refill information.



Reuse the coolant that was removed from the engine.

14. Re-set any customer settings that were lost when the battery was disconnected.

