Initiate Campaign:
Kawasaki has initiated a FAR campaign to repair
all eligible units. The repair consists of replacing
the cam chain tensioner.

Dealer Action
Repair Eligible Units:
Repair only eligible units that exhibit a noisy
cam chain tensioner and have the original cam
chain tensioner installed.

Subject
On eligible units, customers may complain of
a loud metallic noise coming from the camshaft
chain tensioner. This typically occurs when the
engine is hot between 2,000 and 4,000 RPM, or
on engine over run (although it may occur at other
RPM).

Parts Information
Replace the cam chain tensioner only if the unit
exhibits a noisy cam chain tensioner and has the
original cam chain tensioner installed.

Repair Procedure
Refer to the appropriate sections of Service
Manual 99924-1509-02 for information and
procedures related to parts removal and
installation.

PAD

Remove original Tensioner
• Remove right hand, lower fairing.
• Remove pad.

• Remove and discard original tensioner and
gasket as outlined in the service manual.
• Remove all traces of the tensioner gasket.

DISCARD

New Camshaft Chain Tensioner Installation
Procedure.
• Install the O-ring on the new tensioner.

• Apply grease to the O-ring.

PUSH ROD

• Release the stopper and push the push rod
into the interior of the tensioner body until it
bottoms out.
• Install the tensioner body so that the stopper
faces upward
• Tighten the tensioner mounting bolts to
9.8 N•m (1.0 kgf•m, 87 in•lb).

NOTE
oo Do not proceed until the tensioner is bolted to
the crankcase.

• Install the rod into the spring then install the
spring and rod into the tensioner body.
• Install the washer onto the cap bolt.
• Install the cap bolt (with washer) into the
tensioner body.
• Tighten the cap bolt to 20 N•m
(2.0 kgf•m, 15 ft•lb).

The new camshaft chain tensioner requires a different removal procedure than the original. It is included
below for future reference.
New Camshaft Chain Tensioner Removal Procedure.
NOTICE
This is a non-return type camshaft chain tensioner. The push rod does not return to its original position
once it moves out to take up camshaft chain slack. Observe all the rules listed below. When removing
the tensioner, do not take out the mounting bolts only halfway. Retightening the mounting bolts from this
position could damage the tensioner and the camshaft chain. Once the bolts are loosened, the tensioner
must be removed and reset as described in “Camshaft Chain Tensioner Installation”. Do not turn over
the crankshaft while the tensioner is removed. This could upset the camshaft chain timing, and damage
the valves.
• Remove the right hand, lower fairing.
• Remove Pad.

Warranty Information

Repair Verification

This is a Factory Authorized Repair. Repair is
authorized only for eligible units that exhibit a
noisy cam chain tensioner and have the original
cam chain tensioner installed.

After repair the new cam chain tensioner will
serve as repair verification.
